Frontier, gimme back my legions! I mean planets.

There a couple of planets that are special to me in this galaxy, and there were two that were my favourite planets in the entire galaxy. The eagle eyed among you will have noticed the past tense. I was on my way to one of them, a planet in the only planetary nebula that has my tag. On the DWE I visited that nebula instead of Sagittarius A*, since it's only 1,000 ly away. And I found this lovely little mudball:

With the new planet textures I was heading up there again to see how it looked. Halfway there I check the system map:

Nothing like the planet as it was before. Getting a little worried, I remember Beagle Point 3. While everyone was playing hide and seek on planet 2, I was exploring an extensive foggy crater next door:

And again I check the system map

Now from checking other systems, I realise that the system and 3D maps don't accurately represent the planets, but the difference in the two instances here seems a little over the top. Unless the planet surfaces have been changed for 2.2.

Now is this a case of the 3D map being very different to the real thing, or a case of 2.2 completely overriding the previous planetary graphics?

IMHO the planet map is pretty much exactly what the planet is. It should not look so different, and I expect if you'd land there the planets will have changed massively. No clue why.

Ziggy, you have The Right Stuff. Just submerge below the surface of the planets, as I have done, and go exploring for Mysterious Stuff!

With the debate about 3D maps, one of the first things I set out to do was find a colourful planet to compare the 3D map to the real thing. After 2 days, all I found was browny samey planets so I gave up on the debate and search. I thought it was simply bad luck, but now I'm worried. If this is the new realistic standard for planets that would be a real shame.

Part of the difference may be from vastly different lighting. The system map seems to just have generic light, instead of light representative of the surroundings.

No, the problem Ziggy is experiencing is due to my personal computer's graphics card's failings. I, personally, have sucked all the Gud out of the game.

Say it aint so :(

Feel free to ignore him, that is just generic complaining without any basis. Planetary maps mirror the real thing very well, including the canyons/mountains/craters. Its pretty much identical, really. And I have found loads of planets in 2.2 that outdo everything I found before. 2.2 is improved. However, it does seem that either those planets changed, or that the planmap doesnt work well with explored planets before 2.1. I'd suggest you'd try with planets close to you so you can fly there and check out what is happening.

I'm closer to Sag A than I am to the bubble. But with about 10 POIs to check along the way. If in 2 weeks you hear a gutwrenching cry of anguish across the galaxy's ether ... you'll know what's what.

And I'll post a screenie here.

It looks like it needs another scan to show a proper image. To me it looks like its showing a close up of the old style planets that we had before 2.2.

As Sleutelbos said, the new galaxy map seems to be pretty accurate in terms of showing the correct surface of a planet - albeit in different lighting conditions to the 'real thing'.

I'm afraid this could definitely mean that 2.2 has changed the look of your favourite space balls :(

Might be worth sending a bug report once you get to them in person and confirm they've been changed. There's a lot of other people in a similiar boat as you Ziggy - for example my beloved FAS' cockpit has been removed and replaced with the fugly FGS cockpit model. Still waiting for some word on that btw FD *taps foot impatiently*.

Solidarity brother Ziggy!

have you checked them? because what appears to be missing is the nebula as a light source... and this is a big deal for those planets...
