Frontier needs a test server up at all times for testing diffrent kinds of changes.

Frontier really need a test server when experimenting with diffrent kinds of alternative features in the game without effecting the main game. I think it's very important that we explore and try out other changes to the game, that might change the game for the better. If that change doesnt work out, no biggie, it doesn't effect the main game anyway.

For an example: If Frontier wants to test out and let the community be part of it, let's say, they try out a different approach to how Super Cruise can be, like if a ship was less hindered by gravity wells and bodies, this would result into a better acceleration and top speed and deacceleration when moving around in a system, so planets will approach a bit faster and the ship will break in faster, so players get a more sense of speed.

I know there is a lot of people out there that have some really good ideas for the game, but I feel that a lot of those great ideas never get any chance.
There is a lot of cool things they can play around with and let the community be part of it.

I don't think the way Frontier work, everything secretive, and behind closed doors is a huge part of why they fail so much patch after patch. But don't get me wrong, they do some good things too, but if they had the community with them, there would be so much better, and it will also give the players a more better feeling that the game is alive and evolving. And this way, releasing a huge patch every 3 or longer months, always contain bugs, it would be better if they released a minor patch every week and maybe a bigger patch every month when server is down for maintenence.

I feel like this would only be worthwhile for FDev to do for changes that would affect the most basic game mechanics. Things like game physics, collision and damage models, ship loadouts and drastic changes to the economy would all be good candidates for a dedicated 'sandbox' server.

All in all though, I agree with this, especially since I have seen other games do this with massive changes to their game mechanics allowing them to pick and choose the changes that didn't break the game.

Na, not a good idea. I can see users testing stuff like their ship config before adding it to your regular ship on the real server.

Why wouldn't it be a good idea? Does no harm to the live servers. Plus, people would be doing some testing at least!

Here would be the problem. If there a test server. People are going to be playing on that instead of the real game. Then cry foul when they reset the server and they lose everything. Who wins. No one.

If Eve Online is any indication, people rarely use test servers. More importantly, it is strictly PVP. Nothing else is there and it's wiped every day. The aren't any gains. People go there to test beta features or ship fittings. bottom line: it's boring except for specific purposes.

Eve Online has always had their Singularity (SISI) test server open to players.

I don't see a problem with Fdev having a test server as long as player data is never mirrored (or copied) to the main server.

Fdev having a dedicated test server available would give all players the chance to participate in testing new features, re-balances and mechanics. Having longer test phases should cut down on the bugs before the actual release of new content or patches.

Eve Online's test server also doubles as a cheap way for new pilots to test fitting their ships and practice PVP since all available modules and ships on the server cost only 100 ISK or credits.

Eve Online's test server is only wiped when a new build is being tested, not everyday. I'm a 7 year Eve veteran and test server participant. And it's supposed to be boring... it's the test server for testing for bugs not extended playable content.

And then people would complain that not much testing was done......

Who gets to pay for it?

OP - I bet FD would take you up on the idea if your willing to foot the bill for the AWS servers.
