Frontier should remove the free 200k credit line for insurance..

Add an insurance claims screen. If you are unable to pay the insurance claim upfront, you can open this screen at a later time and get your ship back after gathering the credits.

Problem Solved.

Personally I start over when I die, but if i were to go down the insurance route Id prefer to have the option to buy insurance for a fixed period of time... Terms and conditions apply...

Anarchy systems ... Higher premium or no cover
Combat zones / bounty hunter ... Higher insurance costs etc.
Riskier missions could come with insurance as part of the package.

I don't see why there should be a cap though, it just isn't realistic as it stands.

That wouldn't be any better. Players should be allowed to take the risk if they want. Forcing them to sell cargo at a loss or offloading modules or sell their ship at an even bigger loss would be horrible design.

The manual tells you how it works.

I agree that the design needs tweaking. But it's the best death penalty design I've seen. Other games either have permanently harsh death penalties or totally trivial penalties.

ED has a penalty that gives the player 100% control over the risks they take.

Simply refusing to bother to research how one of the most crucial elements of a game works isn't anyone's fault but the player's.

And still.. if it causes 10, 15 or 20 percent of players to stop playing and not come back it's probably in FD's interest to change things...

Why?
(a) It's not realistic. You can't drive on the roads today without insurance. ED is set in 3301, they have invented insurance scanners by then.
(b) It adds nothing to the game. You want it to be "dangerous" but you have insurance? Go ahead, reset your save every time you die.

I don't think the insurance/loan amount needs changing at all. The only thing that is needed is a prominent nag alert when you attempt to launch without sufficient credits to cover the rebuy cost.

Maybe throw in some kamikaze NPCs if they choose to ignore the nag warning too often. ;)

Every time you buy a ship or equipment a proportion of that cost is your pre-paid insurance. When you die you pay the excess.

Disagree by the time you move to a larger vessel you should know better.

Can we keep a bit of danger and challenge in the game please?

While I'm sure the devs are not going to ignore the more challenge-motivated players that make up a lot of the core, and while I think some tweaks could be in order for the current system (such as warning pilots leaving without insurance), I just wanted to agree with the general sentiment here. Risk and challenge has always been part of the spirit of the game. Let's not lose sight of that.

I think its fine as it is, a safety net for new players.

If it were to be changed, my preference would be for it to be removed. I see nothing wrong with the "don't fly what you can't afford to lose" method.
