Frontier... So, about that "jaggy" bug or "anti-aliasing" bug you gave up on...

I noticed after a period of leaving the game and coming back something you may all find a tad interesting...

I noticed in one of the latest Frontier patch notes that they said they gave up trying to fix the "jaggy" problem with texture lines, which has been a massive problem over the years.

Well, this afternoon, while on a planet exploring, I noticed the jagged lines of a ring around the local gas giant I'm near. Thought about the post by Frontier. Turned my character's head (point of reference) and saw it stretch the image the closer the planet got to the edge of the screen - which is normal - but then I noticed the rings smoothed out.

So, not sure if it was co-incidenece or not, I decided to change my FOV settings. Most like people, I have mine set to maximum for the ship, and just over half way for space legs. So, I decided, you know what, let's set it to 0. Pushed the sliders of both ship and on foot FOV to as far as they can go to the left.

The change was instant.

The jagged lines that appeared in the images had all but disapeared for me (my resolution is desktop 1920x1080). When increasing the supersampling to 1.25x, everything looks butter smooth, too (with high FOV the jaggy lines used to still be there - but not anymore, either!).

Also, it is more noticeable on the main menu of the screen where you see your ship parked. Changing the FOV ALSO changes how your ship appears, even while not in the game itself, but on the menu!

Give it a go - an Anaconda or Corvette would be give you the best results for what to look out for.

All these years, and it was FOV to blame. No wonder we or Frontier couldn't pin point the problem.

EDIT: Just as a side note, any further noticeable "jagged lines" you may notice even after adjusting your FOV sliders could be a direct impact of your GPU Driver settings - so double check those (performance related adjustments may have an impact).

Second image still has clear aliasing on high contrast edges.

Even if supersampling and/or FOV changes could resolve the issue adequately--and they can't--the performance cost of the former is too high for most setups while many would find a tunnelvisioned view an unacceptable trade off.

Well... Not really -- it's just that the same 1 metre of world-space object that renders over a certain number of screen-space pixels with the wider FOV, renders over a greater number of pixels with the lower one... :7

Each to their own :) I'm happy with the results! Especially when bumped up to 1.25x super sampling on standard resolution (none of the AMD stuff).

Added an edit to the OP.

Again, I really hope this helps those who hate this issue!
