Frontier store vs. Steam

I'm sorry if this is the wrong place for this, if so direct me to the correct one. I got ED by the original Kickstarter campaign. I played a lot when it came available, but nowadays not much. I haven't gotten Horizons yet. Lately I have thought that I might take up playing ED again, and get Horizons to keep up with the latest additions. Unfortunately my financial situation is now bad and so I have been looking for sales. But the only sales have been on Steam, and I haven't got the game on Steam, just on the Frontier store as per the Kickstarter thing. So first of all I'd like to do right by Frontier, and get Horizons on their store, but since Steam has had (and currently has) such great discounts, it would be much cheaper for me to get it on Steam. What would be Frontier's advice on this, and if all else fails, can I somehow transfer my Frontier store license to Steam?

I bought my game from frontier store in 2015 last mth i switched the serial to a steam one (free to do) then purchased horizons on steam for £4.99 everything works fine

If your copy is so old you will be able to get a steam key and register it on steam - then buy the DLC there.

See this article and the linked ones:

And if you are a kickstarter backer you might have Horizons already included - I get lost in all the combos ;)

Thank you for the replies so far, I see I can add the Steam key now. Still, I will wait for a while because I think it would be more beneficial for Frontier if I buy from their store directly, or is this an erroneous thought?

Mate. Just get it on Steam. It seems like Frontier has more money than you at the moment. Buy the game and enjoy. You will like Horizons and there has been heaps of updates since you last played. It wont even be like the same game.

Heh, thanks, I have kept the game up to date (except not getting Horizons) and checked it every now and then. I haven't dared to take off in my souped up Type 6 because I have forgotten much of the basics (at least the keys to do things), but at least the UI updates (galaxy map, outfitting...) have been very nice. I will at some point take up the basic flight lessons to refresh my "flight license" and then pick up maybe an explorer career again. At the least I have to visit Shinrarta Dezhra because I got the permit with the Kickstarter campaign :)

Thanks to all so far, I got my steam key activated. Just one question before I transfer to the Steam version, for which I presume I'll uninstall the Frontier store version and download the game from Steam (?): Do I need to backup anything locally, or is all the game progress and settings stored in Frontier servers?

If you have space I'd download the steam version leaving the fdev version along - just in case. Once you're happy the steam version worked you can install. keybinds etc are all shared - though you might get a new visited stars cache (only important is you use the visited stars galmap filter).

If I read this correctly, does it mean that I can buy on Steam, download from there, and start a new second account by playing through Steam? Or will that just access my present character in the account I bought long ago through Frontier? Can't quite get my head around the mechanics of using a second account.

Yes you have a new commander.

You have to have a new frontierstore account too - so another email, different from the one you use for your store-bought account. This can be an alias on your normal email account - just about every email provider lets you set up some aliases on your account.

So the commanders are totally separate but your options, bindings, etc are shared so you don't need to do that again, you just have to let Steam install another copy of the game in a Steam Library on your PC.

I have done this a couple of times now - beware of the validation loop nonsense, I have been playing the game for over 5 years and I found the first time I did the Steam login thingie I got really tangled-up with the procedure - it was seamless the second time though.
