Frontier telling me I don't own the game when I try to launch

400+ hours in on Geforce Now

I've ever had any problems, today thought I'd logon for a few hours.

Launch Geforce Now.
Click on "play" Elite Dangerous

The Frontier page appears where I would normally select "launch" but instead I only get "log in" or "link account" options

If I try to log in I get the verification email, and once I entered the code I then get the message "Please purchase or redeem elite dangerous to continue"

what?!?!?

I often get this when logging in through Steam on a PC - the two windows that open are highlighted in bright orange. Closing both windows and starting again usually sorts the problem and brings up the standard launcher with the blue highlighting. It's probably a timing thing.

I get the same if I launch the game through the desktop shortcut - if I launch it by clicking through the steam GUI, then every other time I launch it through the desktop shortcut it works fine (until I restart my pc), then I have to go through the steam GUI again. It seems it needs to launch once by clicking through steam to verify login details...

Sorry, should have been clearer - I only start ED by clicking the desktop icon, a process that first starts Steam. It doesn't cause problems nine times out of ten, but on the tenth occasion it's really easy to stop and start again.
