It's quite impressive that a company would invest a whole year in a free upgrade to a game, when all they needed to do was slap on another season pass price tag and we'd all happily pay.

Speak for yourself. Many people I have friended in game or through discord do not play now and all of them had no intention in buying into another season based on season 2.
If frontier thought they could get away with putting a price on it they would.

There's another good point as well. If they're not charging for season 3 content, sales of cosmetic items will be the only revenue stream ED generates from existing players during 2018. Which might mean more frequent store releases and/or more time being put into each item.

They could have. Doom threads have existed since day one. And the playerbase has remained steady. Shop purchases are abundant. You have no grounds to say no one would buy it. Your friends don't like it. Ok. Maybe ED isn't their kind of game. Believe it or not that kind of thing is subjective.

By adding a button on the store and ensuring that's the only way to get a copy.
All they needed to have done is drop in some new engineers that can upgrade the anti-goid weapons. Everyone would be queuing up to buy it.
Or call the upgrade "Up the Alliance" or something.
+1 - it was the right thing to do, but I am glad they did it, many other developers wouldn't have
I know, I hope the mods get nomex clothing as their uniforms, ok if not flame proof, certainly some corrosion resistant stuff...
