The future for Elite Dangerous is also exciting. Frontier is developing a major new paid-for release for the iconic space simulation which will dramatically expand gameplay and mark the beginning of a new era for Elite Dangerous. This will be characterised by significant new features to appeal to existing commanders, whilst being specifically designed to be a compelling, attractive and welcoming entry point for new players. Targeted for launch at the end of 2020, this major new release on multiple platforms will fall into financial year 2021 (the 12 months ending 31 May 2021).

"We continue to target very significant new opportunities. I am particularly excited that we will be building on the success of Elite Dangerous with a major new release in financial year 2021 and will follow this with two major releases in financial year 2022, one of which will be our next game based on a major global IP licence."

That all sits nicely alongside a couple of assumptions about their current behaviour:

  • PDLC aimed to be a launch title for the new consoles
  • Noob onboarding improved to retain more of the new players attracted (as it’s still ultimately a niche set of genres, and can’t bounce too many potential players if it’s to stay as a rolling concern)
  • PDLC will feature long-planned expansion feature(s), which should please vets

And, possibly unpopular with some vets:

  • Legs fits the bill best as the feature expansion that could be ‘specifically designed to be a compelling, attractive and welcoming entry point for new players’. Flight sims are niche. Interacting with games as a player character is what most people expect...

All seems promising to me. It could add lifeblood to the franchise, and something of a ‘whole new game’. Exciting ;)

ITS WHY wheeeezzeeee I wheeeeeze need cough my salbutamol HACK to remind FD puts on oxygen mask that they have to sort out what they have done first before adding in new shiny that they'll forget about minutes after launch.

I guess Frontier has already come to terms with your condition getting the best of you and planned accordingly.

"specifically designed to be a compelling, attractive and welcoming entry point for new players "
