Frontier, it has been what, two months since there was a CG that involved war (conflict zones) and the last two were broke. When are there going to be more?
Well Frontier needs start paying attention to their group of customers that want nothing to do with PP!
I have zero interest in PP and never will!
I have zero interest in PvP and never will.
You don't see me stamping my feet and demanding that Frontier remove it for everyone else.

Okay, I'll bite.
Powerplay fulfills a number of functions within the game. Most obviously it provides a high level interaction for players getting involved in the high level politics of the galaxy. While there is a higher level abstraction of the superpowers which is controlled by us, it is influenced by the actions that occur within powerplay. The powers are the principal movers and shakers and so provide a framework for guided activity and story within the game. As with other parts of the game this will continue to be refined and expanded as we progress.
Beyond that the powers add some useful geography to the game. At it most simplistic you have the bubbles on the map that help give it shape and makes it easier to navigate several hundred thousand stars. On a star system level is creates predictable effects that ownership by the power provides.
The third major benefit is an additional layer of dynamism within the galaxy, laws changes, benefits and hindrances change with power ownership which increases the level of variety within the game.
It's clear that some players don't like it - and that's fine, the game is about choice and there are different areas of the game that people enjoy or dislike. Some people don't like trading, others don't like combat, some can't appreciate the joy of discovering an earth-like planet in a new star system. That's all fine because it's a choice that you as a player make
