Cambridge-based games firm Frontier Developments announced its latest new IP yesterday, Planet Zoo, but this is one of nine trademarks with 'Planet' in the name filed by the company in the last 13 months.
The Elite Dangerous and Planet Coaster maker has filed eight other 'Planet' brand names - Golf, Railway, Soccer, City, Hospital, Prison, Racing and Transport. These, along with Planet Zoo, were filed and registered with European IP body EUIPO on March 29th, 2018.
All nine trademarks were also filed with the United States' patent authority USPTO on September 27th, 2018 and are pending approval.
There's also a Planet Safari trademark, which was filed and registered with European IP body EUIPO back on August 14th 2015, incidentally the same date that Frontier filed and registered the Planet Coaster name. It's entirely possible that this was an early name for what is now Planet Zoo.
Frontier might never make games using any of these brands and is simply safeguarding its future - companies often file patents and trademarks for projects and tech that never makes it to consumers.
We've reached out to Frontier for comment.
Planet Zoo is likely the fourth IP that Frontier mentioned was in the works in its financial report for the six months ending November 30th, 2018. The title is set to launch this autumn on PC.
"This is the zoo management game we’ve wanted to make for many years," Frontier chief creative officer Jonny Watts said about its newly-announced game.
"We’ve challenged ourselves to build on the games we’ve made before and to carry the great legacy of classics like the Zoo Tycoon series forward. We’re taking everything we’ve learned from our past work and focusing on modern values – incredible authenticity, rich management, limitless creativity and community sharing – to make our best-ever simulation game. We hope you’ll join us when Planet Zoo launches later this year."
It's easy to see why the Cambridge developer and publisher might be considering honing in on this management style of game. As of January 2019, both Planet Coaster and Jurassic World Evolution had sold over two million copies. The former was released in November 2016, while the latter was launched in June 2018.
We caught up with assistant marketing director Zac Antonaci to discuss the success of Jurassic World Evolution in September 2018.

Some of this titles sound really interesting. Although I do have a problem with them, there's a lot. By that, I mean, I hope they take their good time making each one of them instead of finishing one quickly and moving on to the next. I would not mind them taking 30 years to release all of these if it meant they polished them to perfection.
Now, some of these may actually merge/change in the future, but here's my thoughts on each one of them;

Planet Golf: Really excited about this one. I think it's pretty original. Obviously hoping they actually let us play our golf curses! Maybe we can use our character that we create at the start this time.

Planet Railway: A train simulator. I guess some already exist, but I guess I could take a look at their take on it. These games can be pretty calming and stress-relieving. Wonder what their twist on it would be.

Planet Soccer: I guess it would be like a soccer team creator. I'm not really a fan of soccer or football, so I don't really play those games, but I guess others could like it. Could be interesting if they have another plan in mind, different to what the already existing franchises do every time.

Planet City: Hah, called it on the Discord. Now this one has potential! If they allow us a lot of customization, it could be a really good game. Wondering what it will be like. However, I hope they don't avoid some aspects of cities to make standalone games, like "Planet Soccer" or "Planet Transport", since those are really big parts of building cities, like in Cities Skylines. So they have some really big competition to live up to. Hope they can succeed in making an even better game.

Planet Hospital: I've never played a hospital simulator, but I think frontier could make one really well. Has a lot of potential. Definitely would pick it up if Frontier makes it well.

Planet Prison: Same goes as for planet hospital, and I'd be really interested in seeing a prison tycoon in Frontier's "Planet X" style. Seems like a genuinely fun game.

Planet Racing: Well, I guess they could do a racing game too, kinda weird for the "Planet X" format, but eh, who cares. Could be fun. Wondering what would be the plan for this one, since I guess it won't exactly be just a racing game, maybe you're supposed to make the cars and tracks too.

Planet Transport: I think it could be merged with Planet City, since this seems more like a mini-game of a city simulator.

I'd also like some kind of "Planet Architect", which is based entirely on building, with as much creative freedom as possible. Since their building system in Planet Coaster and Planet Zoo (I hope) seems to give us so much freedom, I'd love to see them expand on that.

From the article: "Frontier might never make games using any of these brands and is simply safeguarding its future - companies often file patents and trademarks for projects and tech that never makes it to consumers."

Please don't make assumptions... we know that will end up in disappointment.

Wow - on forums where assumptions are rife - I make positive chat about Frontier and this is what I get. Go yourself Frontier - now I see where this company is heading and what only motivates you now - not the people who pay your wages - just the wages themselves. Wow.

What's your problem? What did you get? It has been moved to Off-topic because it isn't about any current game.
And btw. you don't pay their wages. David Braben does.

Sorry, OP, i honestly don't get what you're upset about. What's wrong with the OT forum?
Firstly, there are plenty of cookies for grabs, and this is actually frequented by more nice people like not myself, but others.

This is a love-hate relationship between the OP and Frontier

Well, they posted it on the planet zoo section so I guess moving it here could be seen as "killing" the thread, cutting short the replies he wanted from the planet zoo frequenters. But I don't know how active off topic is compared to planet zoo general.

MUCH more active. ;)
And also, as OP isn't talking particularly about PZ but rather all upcoming Fdev games, it belongs here much more than it belongs to the PZ forum.

"Planet Soccer"

Really? I posted that as a suggestion. Actually it was a bit of a joke. But can see how that would work.

What about Planet Gamemaker. Where you are a software company.

Where is Planet Big game Hunter?

These game should also have a competitive online mode. Think about it.

You should be able to visit them with passenger in elite Dangerous.

So what's next? Planet Earth?

I wouldn't be surprised if most of these have just been trademarked so nobody else can use them.

That's the usual business practice before anything goes into dev. (Just imagine, you're almost through dev and design and then you find out you can't use the name)
At least, if a company has the money to do so.
