Frustrated... n00b here

ok, game looked cool. Thought I'd buy into it. Here are some gripes of someone who is new to this genre (relatively). Just spent the last 2 hours flying around the bootes system looking for authority fighters because I got a mission to kill three. I had no idea it would get me insta-killed, why would a mission be given to a new player that would do that without warning him/her that it would do that?... ok. No problem, except its my third horrible experience in trying to get into this game. After I played through all of the tutorials I thought I had all I would need to make my way in the galaxy. As soon as Im in, I check the bulletin board and find a nice courier mission. Cool, in fiddling around I find out where to go, I go to my menu to double check the name of the system and I accidentally click on the cancel contract button (Im using an x-52 so it was just a twitch I guess) and then I suddenly find myself with a massive debt from the cancelled mission. Is it so hard to put in an "are you sure" prompt when a player does something that will hurt him/her? Then I find out if I dont pay it Ill get a bounty hunter after me... what a start. So I put on my big kid pants and decide to soldier on. I take another mission and set off to deliver, careful not to incur the wrath of bad design when suddenly upon checking my menu, I see that my debt has almost tripled... .... So I figured after fiddling around that I must have selected a mission with only a couple of minutes left on the timer, I didnt even get out of system (again... I play a lot of games that are punishing to newbs but DANG). Ok, whatever... Ill just restart at this point... oh wait... you can't because...reasons? So I hear you get a new ship if you die, so I figure, well what could possibly be worse than having this massive debt (at least a few thousand seems massive, certainly irritating)... so I pick the nearest star and fly into it. THEN I find out that I will now be paying my debt with every transaction until the end of time. Wow. And that when I decided to take this target mission (really have no clue what any of the symbols mean, I assume the skull ones are bad and I avoid them) to try and fix my financial woes, figuring it wouldn't give me an impossible combat mission this close to the starting zone. Well, once I accepted I went to work deciphering what the hell all the gibberish of the bulletin board mission prompt means and I figure Ill go to Bootes and go to a station and check the news to find conflict zones because that MUST be where the mission wants me to go to kill three authority ships (how am I supposed to know what an authority ship is day one, and that killing one means insta-death?) (only reason I know to check the news is because I watched a lets play... I guess I should have watched a few more)... anyways... 2 hours later and here I am... defeated. I hate this game. I want sooooo bad to love it. I want to be a bounty hunter in it, I love the idea of pvp but I feel like I should have just spent the time playing TIE fighter from gog. This is just my experience lasting the past two days. Good luck with this game, but I can't bring myself to look at that cockpit for another 20 minute hop between stars in the bootes system (really does it have to take so long to fly within system?). Meh, Ill probably try again in a few days. who knows... Ill watch a few letsplays.

1. It is your responsibility in most cases to choose missions you feel comfortable with, I guess.

2. The cancel contract button is annoying, I hope they do something with that.

3. Mission timers - again, check carefully before accepting.

4. You can restart, there is an option to clear your save, although stats remain iirc.

It has a learning curve, no doubt about it and some UI decisions could do with some polish, but we are in a beta with lack of complete user guides and changes still being made... hopefully things will be improved for launch.

Holy hell, paragraphs?

You can reset. Clear save in the menu..

This is still a beta the game is not released till mid december, so stuff like menus and not having a 'are you sure' button is polish not yet added. I have done the exact same thing myself, so has pretty much everyone.

This game doesnt hold your hand. You need to use some common sense. If you have just started playing you dont agree to take a mission that involves killing 3 police ships or missions you dont think you have time to do. You have freedom of choice, so making stupid choices will have consequences.

Pressing enter twice creates a paragraph, makes it easier to read.

Yep, watch a few videos on youtube. You'll become better at it. I could dock and land without ever playing the tutorials because of it. I was however interdicted and destroyed by a pirate on my first peaceful trade run, but that's ok. I'm still a n00b myself. At least you know now to avoid authority vessels. Good luck. :)

Well thats an unfortunate start but on the plus side your learning the more "annoying" mechanics of the game :). First off ive only been playing a week or so, my information maybe in accurate. I did however suffer a little as you did as i found the tutorials useful for general things but not great for general ingame mechanics such as bulletin board etc, i did however expect this as it is a beta and a freestyle game. For your information the pictures on the bulletin board are as follows, TARGET ICON = Killing of a specific NPC or type of NPC's, SKULL = Pirate mission, stealing cargo and delivering it and ARROWS ICON = Hauling, either collecting or taking cargo to a destination, all missions have a timer of somekind, ranging from 10 mins to 8 hours and some not all have fines, these are all indicated when taking the job or indeed if you check in the transaction tab on your left hand info panel. You usually have 24 hours to pay a fine before a bounty is issued, dieing during this time wont have any effect as far as im aware as your still on the honeymoon period that gives you time to make money to pay it, the easiest thing for you to do would be to focus on hauling missions (being careful to read the descriptions) to make the money to pay the fine, also not all missions come with a fine, usually the shorter the time to more likely a fine is, just a case of reading the job descriptions carefully. You could try to make the money doing bounty missions, the only reason i think hauling is a better option is that there is a risk of ship destruction and repair costs with bounty missions and if your already in the negative it probably wont help your situation much.

Im sure other players maybe able to give more detailed advice, i am after all only about 6 days more advanced in the game than yourself.

Ha, I remember your first few posts not long ago about being frustrated with the game and almost giving up, and now look, already teaching other beginners how to play. Nice vid.

Indeed. That's always good to see. Glad that not everyone sees difficult or challenging equating to OMG IMPOCEROUS. And this is certainly not the worst or most unforgiving of learning curves. I still remember playing the Apache gunship sim endorsed by Jane's. It took me a month to get out of the basic tutorials, EVERY key did four things (really), and in my first combat mission I was annihilated most grievously.

a mission be given to a new player

"are you sure"

conflict zones

okay first off:

you're in a sidewinder, the smallest ship in the game with the lowest equipment. don't go for combat until you have a better ship.

don't spend more than a few minutes in a system, enough time to dock, pick up a trade run, choose a target, undock and jump.

missions don't discriminate. there are no levels, just what ship you're in, so the game doesn't care if you're new or if you can even take the contract when it comes up with them.

i raised this point myself. had the issue myself.

as above, don't go look for conflict zones until you have better ship or equipment.

i suggest you reset your character. there's a button for it before you log in somewhere.

I understood your situation. Before I had started playing this game I watched a lot of video from Youtube so I know what I need to do. Authority fighters are police cars so newbie shouldn't pick a fight.

My guide:
- Go to option menu and reset your game.
- Start your game in Solo mode.
- Fly to Nav Beacon near the sun. Scan and shoot down WANTED ships for bounty reward. Only target Sidewinder, Eagle, Hauler, and Lakon 6. Don't touch Viper, Cobra, or ASP they will surely kill you.
- Return to stations to claim your reward. Keep doing this until u have money to buy a Hauler or an Eagle.

If you buy a hauler,
- Sell your weapons and buy cargo storages to max.
- Start doing trade missions (watch out the timer).

If you buy an eagle,
- buy 3 gimbaled burst lasers and continue to hunt at Nav Beacon. You could kill all WANTED ship but don't touch Viper. Viper will run away every time and u are slow.

- Buy a cobra
- Upgrade Cargo storages to max
- More missions and if you are lucky you will receive 100k-150k mission.

Warning:
- Don't pick up canisters.
- If u make a mistake and become WANTED, hurry and pay your bill. Don't fly to main station they will kill ya.
- Sometime at Nav Beacon if a group of ships try to attack you, don't shoot back. Save and Quit then everything will be back to normal.

Yeah, you see lots of first day rants with this game. Its not difficult, its just not instant win. People just need to get passed the first day or so.

I guess people are so used to games being nearly completed in 4 hours so when they pick up Elite and still cant dock after the same amount of time its a bit of a shock to the system :)

In terms of flying, this game is not more difficult than any of the classic space sims. On the other hand, this game will definitely not hold your hand. If you make a mistake, you will cary the consequences. Yet I never had the feeling that I was unfairly being "punished" for my actions.

Thank you all who posted helpful tips.
Why would I write paragraphs? Its way less ranty that way!
Anyways, again thank you.

Weve all been there... I was utterly frustrated for several days because none of it made sense and there is little or no hand holding other than snippets on these forums... The number of restarts i did and the sideys i fried you would not believe. Still do the occasional stoopid like pressing forward rather than up when leaving the pad... Or trying to barge T9s out of the way when leaving the airlock... Happy days!

If bounty hunting is what you're interested in, good news is you can start doing it right away.

Forget the missions, just go to a nav beacon or an extraction zone and wait for NPC's with "WANTED" status to show up, then blast them sky high. Remember to cash in your vouchers in a station once in a while.

The starting Sidewinder is perfectly fine for combat, it's not the best ship for the purpose, but on the bonus side it's free, so even if you die you can just respawn without losing anything.
