Frustrating download

I am sorry but i need to express my frustration with frontiers download of Elite. I have recently downloaded elite from steam, what took me about 15-20 minutes maybe, since i got 1 GB/s download speed. After the download i opened the launcher and i had to realize that i need to do an additional download to install the live version of Elite, which i wanted to begin with but whatever. The download is now still at a speed of 0.03 MB/s and already running longer than the steam download of the legacy version. Sometimes the download gets bumped to about 1/3 of my internet speed for about one or two seconds and then it is down again to 0.03. What is going on? I have never seen such a bad handling of installing a game in the past 5-10 years. But thats not even the worst part. surprisingly, even though the download seems to be extremely low it appears that somehow it is still using or rather blocking most of my internet traffic. My Task Manager says that elite uses 0 Mbit/s and sometimes for 1s around 300-400 Mbit/s yet it takes minutes to get a new website open or the website gives an error that i should check my network. It is so f frustrating that i want to bin the game already. They managed to give steam a decent download which i presume is possible because steam has its own servers and you download the legacy version of that, but why make it different for the live version and not give it a separate download option? They would've to update 2 versions in steam then but it would be such a better user experience.

I can not believe that there would be such an extreme of this in 2022, nearly 2023 and i am so f annoyed with this topic.

why blame frontier blame steam you got from them.
Dont get me wrong, the download from steam is excellent, but you can only download the legacy version from steam, since frontier gave them the legacy version, instead of the live version. They should have made a separate download option of what version you want otherwise you will always have to do this extremely slow download through the elite launcher, as it is right now.

Just to give a feel about how this download is. I have also tested around and without using multithread downloading i can use my internet normal again, but the download speed is then far lower then when i use it. It only goes sometimes to 7MB/s while using it gives 30-40MB/s. These download speeds still only occure for several seconds.

Thanks mate. Yea its a bumer that they changed the steam download to legacy. I have played elite in the past and thought i should play it again, after i reinstalled windows, but this kinda throws a wrench in it. Well i expect to sit here for another couple hours then.

I am curious if there's some kind of issue with downloading it within the Steam version of the launcher vs the regular Frontier Store version, since I've heard this complaint before from Steam players, but not had any issues with the download of 4.0 myself when I did it.

No i did download the Elite launcher a second time from the Website and it is the same result. The thing is you Download legacy from Steam servers, but as soon as you open another launcher, even if you launch if from steam, you are out of the steam network.

One question, since it worked great for you, where are you from?

Well the thing is that i found some old threads from years ago where especially people living in Europe had this problem. You also mentioned that it was slow and i am in Germany so maybe the connection is even worse here. I hope that this is just a coincidence.
I live in France and the download from the launcher (since it downloaded legacy from steam) is about 6Mb/s and my total bandwith used is at 50Mb/s so yeah it's definitely weird.

Besides, isn't the Frontier HQ in the UK ? It wouldn't make sense for Europeans to have a slower dl speed, unless the download servers aren't in Europe

Every single download doesn't come directly from the FDEV server, it gets uploaded to Amazon servers and gets downloaded from there. I am in Australia, 1,200 klms north of the most isolated capital city in the world, there are essentially 2 largish towns between here and there, and I always get a reasonable download speed. The download servers...the Amazon cloud servers will be located all over the world, so there will be some in Europe no doubt.

I think they're actually based in Ireland. Which is not a reference to your other post.

The game is downloaded from cdn.zaonce.net which uses Amazon CloudFront. So it depends on what price class FDEV chose for that CloudFront distribution, but one would hope they chose all regions. Either way, the files would be cached at Amazon's edge servers closest to you (within whatever price class they chose), regardless of where they originate.
