Frustrating fun in Eravate last night

So I did my daily peek into open last night and decided to head to Eravate since there was some talk of experienced Cmdr's blowing up helpless (new) players in their Sidewinders. Not that I was gonna make that much of a difference in my Vulture against a wing of Anacondas but figured if it was just some lone "wing-nuts" in lesser ships I might be able to provide some deterrence.

Anyway,,,,

Upon arrival I noticed the usual "uh-oh, the universe is starting to skip again,,," as the third hollow icon popped onto my radar. This time I figured screw it, I am going to at least get to my first destination and see what's up in "normal" space.

Upon arrival at Cleve Hub I was relieved to see the "skipping" was gone, even with a couple of Cmdr's in the instance. It's kinda fun to see hollow icons pop in and out of your radar and,,,, and,,,, HEY! Why are some of these Cmdr's just disappearing? And wait,, now their reappearing out of thin air? Or thin space as it were.

Communication was a real hand wringer since I only got one replay to the 5 or so hails I tossed out. I did do a local "howdy" to the system in general and then started doing individual hails to several Cmdr's with no response other than my system telling me "Friendship drive charging,,," as they left the system. Maybe they thought I was a ganker looking to light them up?

The 2 weirdest examples were:

1. A Cmdr who was showing up as "Now you see me, Now you don't, Now you see me,,,,, who sent a reply several minutes after my initial hail but I could not for the life of me single him out on my comms panel to reply back.

2. I sent a wing request to another Cmdr in an Asp to see if he wanted some "cover" while trading. While waiting for a response I notice he is suddenly in a wing of 2. But I don't see anyone else in the area?!?!?!? Since I have never tried to "wing up" with anyone I will ask: If someone accepts my wing request, shouldn't I get some notification on my end?

I then decided to just head to another port and pick Ackerman Market. On the way, I noticed a "wanted" Cmdr in a Vulture and hail him to see how his game is going. Again, no response. I do however notice he appears to be trying to get on my tail. Hmmm, nope, not gonna happen. I just want to talk buddy,,,,,

So for the next few minutes we do the who can get on who's tail dance. All the while I am trying to send further hails. (As an aside: I have a new found respect for all you folks who can fly in an evasive/aggressive manner and STILL be able to type out chats! How freaking long did you have to practice at that?!?!?! It's like trying to jog and write down notes about stuff at the same time!!!)

He/She must have got bored with the whole affair and frame-shifted away.

So back to the disappearing Cmdr's: I assume this sudden disappearance is what combat logging looks like. I am sure this was not the case since they were "coming and going" on radar and I had visual confirmation as well. Not sure what to make of that.

I don't think the whole experience was bad. I did notice 2 Vipers (by themselves at different times) who were just "hanging out" around the station who opted to leave after I sent them a "Howdy! How goes your game?" comm. So I like to think I was "scaring" off some would be gankers who were there just to light up Sideys.

Not sure how to ticket this but I will try and compose the experience into a short/non-rambling ticket message to Frontier.

And finally (Thanks for sticking around long enough to get to this part) My apologies to any Cmdr's who saw me last night in Eravate that may be reading this. I am not an unsocial lurker who is creepily floating around in space. I am trying to resolve my issues with my internet connection.

Fly well Cmdrs,,,,,,,,

Well, I think I may be on to what the problem is. I saw a thread in the Mac forum section about Minimum Internet Requirements and a member (Thank you Surly_Badger) suggested checking latency for the Internet connection. Here are my (horrible) results:

I never thought to check this part of my connection. Maybe this explains why my connection in open is so terrible:

I am in the Midwest (Wisconsin) and this is I am guessing, not so good? Another Cmdr who is in Chicago is getting MUCH lower (and consistent) results.

Until I get this resolved I don't think playing in open is going to be viable for me. It was suggested that playing this way is not just frustrating for me, but anyone else who is in my instance? And I don't want to impart my problems on other Cmdrs....

NUTS!!!!
