Frustrating start

First off, loved frontier for many years, and so excited for this game.

However, I had a really bad start so I wanted to share my experience in hopes that the eventual "noob-tutorial" could address the issues and look for advice from players

I played through the single player all but the last scenario completed, but when I first went to Dock - I realized I didn't know what I was doing so I ended up watching a video and spending a large portion of my "docking" time looking up controls.

I was just about docked when time ran out. I was then Immediately fined for "tresspassing". I left the area and requested to dock again, first 2 times denied - third time allowed. I then docked just fine - loaded up with Best cargo I could afford and set my destination for my trade route.

Immediately upon leaving I was Insta-Gibbed by "Azeban City" apparently because I still had a fine.

Now I have no cargo and no money to buy anything worth trading.

I'm really excited to play this game - but it will be a long time before I decide to dig my way out of the black hole I'm starting in.

Don't think of multiplayer as ... Ok now I'm playing for real!
Its a Beta..
Test it...
Play around and get your controls setup the way you want them.

Your first ship and 1000 credits are free anyway, so take as long as you need sucking at docking until you don't suck anymore...
When you get fined or run out of money, find creative ways to blow yourself up and take the free sidewinder and 1000 credits again! :p

Most importantly RELAx and have fun learning...

Welcome :)

I'll second the advice above... I would suggest practicing docking and taking off in the free sidewinder with no cargo just to get used to it.

This beta is much easier in some senses, because money is much easier to come by than it was before. This is probably to get as many people testing as wide a bunch of stuff as possible, and won't follow into the game. However, it is considerably more complex before (and it was always pretty complex), with little to no guidance in game; this will surely change for release. We just have to figure out what does what and how, and share the knowledge :)

Learning the hard way is the only way right now, but so long as you do learn, you have progressed! :)

You haven't lost anything, as you have just started so you can wipe your save and begin again.

Thing about guides and tutorials etc made by FD is the game is in flux, so anything they make may be out of date in the next build.

There are some good tutorial videos for new players here.

While not fully organized, there are lots of tips and guides floating around in this forum.

For example, the simple techniques of identifying the side with the entrance on approach to a coriolis space station could be found via a question in this forum or doing a bit of search.

Hanging around this forum and reading through stuff is a good part of the beta testing experience.

Thanks for replies - I got the free sidewinder back - but definitely not the 1000 credits again... really hard to make any money without any money.

If you get in a hole select "clear save" and you get to start over. Or you can wait for a mission that gives you cargo to deliver.

Well not exactly a n00b thing that I did but it was something I did on a whim..

I was leaving a station and I saw a sidewinder coming in. Naturally I just scanned it and saw it was a WANTED criminal. So I thought - "Why not test station defenses?"

So I deployed hardpoints, let my C3 lasers rip. I had gotten the sidewinder down to about 20% hull before the station defenses blew me up (Cobra with Mirror armour).

So - YUP STATION DEFENSES WORK!

:D

ps: Had a bunch of NO-FIRE ZONE fines after I came back with a new Cobra :)

same thing happened to me.. better to suck now, than later. but there are many "predators" waiting for new players to venture out who may be wanting to just experience what this has to offer, and kill them.
when that happens.. and it will; dont worry - it makes them feel big.

Do missions ^^ Go and exterminate some floating-bounties around... you'll learn how to dock, fly, fight, jump,.... all you just need for now ;)

And again, don't forget, it's just a GAME, which in add on is still in BETA version. I think some here forgot that too fast.

Thanks all. Upon restarting the game I had my 1000 credits back - still have a $300 bounty though :(

I have even been able to do some trading :)

Tip 1

Don't buy cargo, just run Light Cargo Missions from the bulletin boards. 2-5k a pop.

Tip 2

Don't upgrade your sidewinder if you get killed just get the free one until you can afford a hauler.

Tip 3
Don't pay fines. Remove bounties by getting killed and then just get free sidey back. Obviously don't be carrying cargo.

If you want to lose money fill your sidey with cargo which represents all your money and crash it. Whining often ensues.
