Frustration at Ancient Ruins

First and foremost; Greetings!

I am writing this post as an open letter to the FDEV team. Not wholly sure if this is frowned upon, and if so, I do apologies. But for the past 7 years I’ve been captivated by this game. I love it. Despite its flaws, and its untapped full potential, it is a wonderful architecture of realized imagination. I thank you for having the opportunity to have played in it and I praise the skills and intelligence of the programmers, artists, and developers who have made it happen. I love Odyssey! It was a great content add! So THANK YOU! But let me get to the reason I started this…

The reason I am writing this post, in short, is because we are stuck. For the past 6 years we have delved into the Guardian Ruins and lore, and invested an ungodly amount of time into thinking about the glyphs, the obelisks, the relic, all the death entwined items, and even just the general layout ancient ruins. It’s come to a point where it is borderline unhealthy. But it is still fun, so I do it anyways. The fun aside we are stuck. The folk at Canonn are at the end of our wits with this. All to the point that the more skeptical folk have just seen the Guardian content just as a venue into which “gear” is injected into the game and that that story will only progress when FDEV wills it. In other words we have to wait for a content patch.

Here is my conundrum with this: The Guardian lore released by Ram Tah and the tidbit from Melville, all hints otherwise. But we have been for 6 years (maybe even more) scrounging inside the Ancient Ruins, trying to activate something, or decipher something… and we have come up with nothing substantial. Everything in those places seems like something, but does nothing. The closest thing we have is Obelisk UNIQUE audio, which seems very random, but matches in aspect with some of the “language” lore. We have yet no idea how to translate it. Nothing IN game matches to give us a hint on what the different bars mean or what they could mean. Which they very well could all be words. We just seem to be missing that one piece of information that would allow us to crack it. At least that is what it feels like. But more and more we are starting to feel like it is just random fluff. Fluff like the obelisk glyphs.

Take those for example. We for sure thought they meant something. Then they got changed. Alright great… they mean nothing. Then they got changed back. Now they are an inverted pattern. Well what does that mean? Nothing, it means nothing. But someone specifically changed them. They were designed differently. They didn’t change back to the original “loading” screen they used to be when they had three different patterns. They got changed back to something totally different. Sooo what does it mean? Is it something, is it nothing? Like this is unhealthy. Yeah, it can be entertaining to speculate. But at some point, when the rug is getting pulled from under us, I would like a clear answer. I don’t want a hint. I want confirmation. Though at this point… I’d gladly take a hint. It’s not Raxxla… hints are totally allowed! Unless it is Raxxla…

Let me get back on track. The Ancient Ruins have long been in the game, but because the interaction within them is so limited, they feel like we have missed something. We’ve tried just about everything. Even if we’d deciphered the obelisk… we don’t know what a correct answer would look like. It is all random! Guardian ruin placement… not a specific shape. We checked, not even close. Unless the shape that they were going for, was the simulation of a scrunched and balled up paper. I don’t know. We don’t know. Nothing makes sense, nothing seems to do anything… Places we want to search; permit locked. Ok so there is a game design barrier. Why? Do we have to unlock it as players? Can we unlock it? Now, or do we have to wait for the next phase in the story? Or are you waiting for us as a player base to trigger something? We don’t know. And maybe some of my comrades are right. Maybe there is nothing more. Maybe we are just here getting dangled and stringed along, year after year. I don’t know. We don’t know.

Some of Ram Tah’s lore is dubiously contradicting. Melville’s bit was before the Ancient Key… like it is unfair. You’ve changed things. And I understand it’s a game. It’s yours. We love it, but this portion is starting to get frustrating! Not knowing if the time invested into something is nothing is quite frankly… depressing.

So all I would kindly request is; confirmation on whether we missed something with the Ancient Ruins (not the Guardian structures … that’s another can of worms) that we can activate, decipher, or reach.

It took over 40 years to obtain three versions of the Rosetta Stone in the British Museum and still there is no definitive answer.
I do feel your pain ive been researching the guardian sites since i came here over two years ago and the size of my XL doc, not to mention the 300+ A4 sheets i have accumulated is testament to the work i have put in.
I have years (too many) experience of ancient monuments around Europe and i have tried to apply this too the Guardian sites due to their similarity but i don't think we can compare (or should) two species that are so different in culture.
My guess is that (atm) there is no hidden cypher, they are just decorations, the glyphs on the stones were for the Ram Tah quest.

Im not saying that there isn't a complete language/alphabet that Fdev have set up to base quests and lore on, like Tolkien preparing for his masterpiece, i just think that there isn't enough in place yet for it to make sense.

We keep searching 🤘

Differences between Gaurdian ruins and IRL ruins:

1. Repeating symbols and Meaning
  • IRL symbols are created by someone with purpose and meaning. Certainly repeating symbols. They mean something. Possibly not what we expect.
  • In video game they could be completely meaningless. Cool graphics made for atmosphere.

2. Unchanging
  • IRL symbols, drawings, ancient artifacts don't suddenly change. Except from damage.
  • In video game changes can be made at whim or mistake of developer. Which does not make any sense. It could be argued that using advanced technology ancient relics might change, but described as above highly unlikely.

The OPs underlying thoughts are valid and leads to a disconcerting question. Is this an intended puzzle and does it have a solution? Or is it a broken puzzle? Or is it just random crap thrown into a video game for atmosphere? At this point it is hard to distinguish programming mistakes and random nonsensical or unintended game modifications from actual puzzle clues.

My Conclusion:
I'm not suggesting that Frontier give away the solution to game puzzles. But providing information regarding any level of lore validity to what has been presented within the game (or clarification of what was just a mistake) would be nice for the sake of the puzzle. If there is a puzzle. Or was a puzzle that is now broken. Otherwise I would conclude it is nonsensical meaningless crap thrown in the game for atmosphere. And wouldn't bother pursuing game puzzles provided by Frontier any longer because it probably a fake puzzle with everchanging clues and no solution designed to bulk up player activity time.

As soon as the ruins appeared I spent months crawling through them, trying to solve puzzles and even forgot that it was a game.
But then they found all the bases and read all the entries and I remembered that it's just a game and people write it.
But the most important thing is that the game is still evolving. If the game had not changed more, it would have everything inside, but for now there is no point in looking for something that it may not yet be implemented.
For me personally, as long as there are closed zones in the game, there is no point in looking for something.

Excellently put! I started off by wanting to make a reasonably well thought out post, and ended up rambling. So I appreciate you putting better sentences into my thoughts.

But that is the thing... it would be easy to just say, "Hey gents we appreciate your intensity and deligence for the ancient ruins, but there is nothing there to progress... at this time."

Like that would be like... SWEET perfect. I can move on. But I can't because I can't get a straight answer except a bowl of blue M&Ms.

Didn't you see when Bruce used them to make a blue triangle on the desk in front of him? IT'S A SIGN

We did. It's literally the opposite of what I asked. It's vague, and if it is something, it seems like a hint.

This hint could mean a myriad of things. One, it's not specific on whether it is in reply to this post. So it could either mean in reference to Ancient Ruins or Guardian Structures or Guardian Beacons, or all three.

Triangles are everywhere around all those guardian locations. We have just about exhausted triangle correlations. Putting triangles on the table is like saying... Go back and do it again.

The M&Ms.... Does it mean Guardian Orbs... Does it mean Guardian Items.... And then what? There is no interaction with the ruins. Which hey if we haven't figured out how to trigger it fine. That's ok, I understand if it is puzzle that needs to be cracked.

I want to know if there is an actual puzzle at the ANCIENT RUINS that needs to be cracked, that can be cracked right now.

Like the Livestream was great... It gives hope, that maybe... But maybe maybe we are just reading into a guy just eating M&Ms. Maybe he's talking about Grelics. Maybe the clue has to do with new current stuff, and not the old stuff.

I just want a simple answer about the ancient ruins.

Does 3 mean.... Yes there is a puzzle in the ancient ruins or does 3 mean... No there isn't a puzzle in the ancient ruins?

What is your interpretation of that 3? Yes or no?

I believe there is no puzzle there.
Try to go the other way, what can this puzzle provide.
I remember puzzles that players couldn't solve for a long time, then the developers explicitly said what needed to be done.
For example: listen to them.
