FSD countdown timer - a question from old

Verbatim from many many moons ago but i still wonder why, perhaps now we're more enlightened we can solve this riddle?

"Just a question I have often thought, your frame shift charges normally on the bar then there is a 5 second count down....
during this time you can't take damage it's just a time delay if we can't remove it and it's needed for some magic programming then why 5 seconds and not 3 or even 1??

Its just clumsy and annoying, we have already charged the fsd so why wait another 5 seconds?!?!? "

thoughts?

I've always thought you are invulnerable once the countdown has started but I never bothered to test that idea.
I've jumped more or less through the corona of a white dwarf. Got all the warnings during the countdown, but when I dropped out in the following system, ship and all the modules were intact.

Not really helpful to your post but you can turn off all sound effects relating to "Friendship Drive Charging" and the "5,4,3,2,jump" audio. So all that's left is the HUD display count down.

Connectivity and matchmaking.

that's been silenced for a long time along with "fuel scoop deployed" im now hoping to kill the countdown...

Connectivity and matchmaking.

is that not done in Witchspace? or can it not be done in there with all the other magic which goes on (im no programmer)

Witchspace is just the loading screen. I'd say the whole kebob starts right when you lose control. I mean maybe they just have us lose control for immersion. After all I've been killed while being locked out back then, so it surely used to be at some point that I was still in MP instance while being locked out.
Maybe they're just calling home via Andromeda trying to connect?

maybe, if its required lets cut it from 5 to 3, or even 1 ;)

I use a wake scanner a lot to follow other players through hyperspace, I can tell you, that it doesn't seem like any of the match making begins at the countdown judging by the bandwidth monitor. perhaps a really quick jab to check if it should even bother trying to do the rest, certainly, the massive majority of it happens during the hyperspace tunnel, I can nomally tell if I'm going to end up in their instance on the other side during hyperspace, but I'm never sure at countdown.

Speaking of which, I really wish the instance could be fully passed over to you, if the other player say, drops to normal space while I'm still in the tunnel, so their low/high wake is there at least. Generally even with a pretty fast wake scanner, I could lose them after jump four or five even if they don't drop to normal.

Like the style crease on the side of a car to break up what would otherwise just be a big slab of bodywork, the count-down is there to break up what would otherwise simply be a slightly longer hyperspace sequence.

And it does the job :)

As mentioned you are invulnerable during this countdown, to the outside observer you have already jumped.

Relativity at work in Elite Dangerous.

But also, I think it's for the cinematics of the moment - when the countdown happens, you're also treated to the "tearing a hole in the fabric of spacetime" animation, and that's neat as hell. I wouldn't change that for the world.
