FSD interdictor ratings

Tootling around non-anarchy suns, when there are "wanted" NPCs drifting about, seldom results in them stepping on my coattails. Since they won't pick a fight with me, I will have to pick one with them.

So, I need a FSD interdictor. What do the ratings signify? There's certainly a significant price ramp-up. The Outfitter is not very helpful, nor is the wiki.

I know 1-to-5 is smallest-to-biggest and that's pretty plain, and A-to-E is best-to-worst but I'm not clear on how to understand the spec that the letter signifies.

Grateful for any guidance

Edit: On reflection, "smallest-to-biggest" is not that plain -- what does "bigger" do better that's not already covered by the letter?

Actually just an educated guess (as I bought an A rated one) but possibly how close you need to be in order to engage (seems to vary, but I think I've been able to engage at more than 100ls - perhaps depends on the target size). Maybe it also has an effect on how hard you have to play the anti-evasion game - seems quite easy for me.
