FSD range - I am I doing it wrong or is mine bugged?

Not feeling well so I keep this short. Ask for more detail if needed.

Was trading between systems 37Ly apart.
Stop for a change in play. In-system trading, NB hunting, missions to systems next door etc.
Plan to go back to trading between favourite systems.
Buy A4 FSD for T6.
Plot route. Should only be 5 stops or less if memory correct. (Memory of doing this in Cobra with C4 FSD, 56 cargo, ~12.4Ly range)
11 stops.
Try fast route option.
Same 11 stops.
Fully laden range 18LY.
Pick neighbouring system 14Ly away.
4 stops to reach system.
Switched back to C4 FSD.
Same routes, same stops.
Bug? Fuel related? Does it think I have a 12Ly FSD or less?

What gives? :(

Make sure you have the fastest route selected not the most economical route.
I had to select it twice, before it recalculated the correct route.

Sorry, are you saying that you have a fully laden range of 18 Ly but if you try to go to a system 14 Ly away, you need 4 jumps??

Or I got it wrong?

This. If you select fastest route after it has worked out the most economical it often won't update. Select another system and calculate fastest route then reselect your original one and re-calculate the route as fastest.

the map may say 11, but you may have only done 5. I have the same, 33 LY trip, map says 7 jumps, I can do it in 3. Just go back to the map, write down all the jumps, see on the left UI where the furthest one is, jump, and do the same for the remainder.

Closed the game. Re-opened. Selected fastest a few times. Selected other systems to trya nd refresh it. It improved my 37Ly route but even that route wasn't the fastest. Then it became stuck in eco or short mode for other systems.

No you got it right. I selected a 'test' system that is 10.53Ly away. I can jump 29.85LY unladen and 18.92Ly laden. In the galaxy map it plots a 4 jump route whether it's economical or fastest. I have also selected other systems to try and get it to refresh itself. But if I select it in the nav panel I can jump straight there.

That would be alright if my max laden was low because the furthest system I can see in my nav panel is 14.5Ly. But that doesn't exactly take full advantage of my FSD when there is a system ~16Ly away that I know I can reach in one jump but can't target it directly using the nav panel or galaxy map.

Target the system you want to go to manually instead of the route plotter. May not be as "fuel efficient" but it will be less jumps

The NAV panel will only show so many systems, if your jump range is longer it's less likely it will show the longest jump. You need to go to the galexy map and select the system you want to go to (don't plot the route just select the jump farthest point you want to jump) and then FSD to it.

EDIT: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=82832 Check that tool out if you want, it maps the quickest route with your max jump range. I use it when I do rare good runs.

Ever since the route planner was added I forgot about selecting systems in the galaxy map *facepalm*. I jumped my route using the galaxy map manually and I made it so that rules out fuelling, fuel consumption limit or FSD problems. Having to target systems manually using the map makes having the route-planner almost pointless. I could have sworn the route planned when I had a cobra was shorter than what it's currently planning. I will have to switch back to it and see at some point.
I really wish the nav panel showed more systems till I got to the very bottom of this.
