Newcomer / Intro FSS and Disco Scanning with the TFlight HOTAS X

Hi Team
So I come back after a year and now have a Hotas X and find we have new toys like the FSS
DOes this mean when I land in a system i don't need to honk to discover things?
I will try to read up what the FSS is for but could someone give me some tips on keybinds?
I vaguely recall something like bind it to same button as zero speed for on and any speed bind for off or something?? Can you have same bind for 2 functions like that?

Thanks O7

You still need to honk. The difference is that what was previously a "detailed surface scan" can now be done remotely via FSS.

So honk, switch to FSS and you immediately see what types of planets are in the system. If there is for example an Earth Like, you can tune into its "frequency" and use the FSS to look around and find it. when you do, you've done the surface scan.
If you want more data, you can still fly to it and use the new surface scanner to cover it in probes.

As for the bindings, you will need.
Switch HUD mode - scanners dow only work in discovery mode and weapons in combat mode.
Enter/Exit FSS
FSS absolute tuning (bind it on yaw axis or something)
FSS yaw and pitch (for looking around like in SRV turret, for example)
Zoom in to target (you can use a primary trigger for example)
Zoom out
Target the zoomed-in body (so you don't have to go to system map to find out what you've scanned)

Most bindings are at the bottom of the Controls settings, except for the HUD mode switch, which can be found under mode switches.

But when I jumped into a system it started doing an auto scan and told me there were new bodies (same info as I got with the old honk). That’s what has confused me as I haven’t even found the disco scanner to anything on my Hotas yet...

The disco scanner has a limited "passive" scanning ability. That means that when you jump into the system, the scanner automatically finds anything that is in a 500ls radius. (Like a main star, a couple of close planets or asteroid belts,..) but if you want to discover the WHOLE system, you have to honk. (And then look for it through FSS)

The disco scanner now is a built-in part of the ship, not an optional module, btw.

...with one exception: if that system had been previously scanned by another CMDR (and the data sold?), simply honking it will populate your system map. For some such systems, you can still FSS the planets.

I have littel experience with those, though - my in-bubble CMDR usually just honks and rarely uses the FSS, my exploration CMDR is a few 10 klys and probably several months from selling any data...

That explains why I can’t find it ! D’oh!!

Don't worry they payed you back so you haven't lost any money.

The DSS is still there but changed, when you get close to planets in supercruise you can use it too launch mapping probes these will provides lots of new information.

hello happy newyear all, what is honking?
i tried a black box mission today, dont fully understand all the scanning techniques but managed to get a target body, wich was the star, tried to get close but it got very hot, what am i doing wrong here?

"Honking" is a slang for firing a discovery scan. Because it does that sound. :D
After you "honk" you can checks the FSS screen and look around the system for planets, unindentified signals, mission targets, etc.

If your mission target was so close to the star that you had to bail out, I'd say it is a bug, but more likely it just pointed to to the star as if to say "this system here"
You can find the mission target either by honking (see above), or dropping into Nav Beacon area and scanning the beacon.

Btw. Don't do black box missions, unless you have a fast ship and are really good at scooping cargo. ;)

You have to put it in a firegroup (like you would a weapon), Switch the HUD more to scanning (the blue one) and press and hold the trigger. :)
