FSS has just ruined it for me.

The biggest mistake made by frontier in this game was the inclusion of the advanced discovery scanner.......It took the exploring nature out of exploring, and this whole fss update seems to be trying to combat that mistake but to the detriment of VR.

I actually miss the days when i only had a basic or intermediate scanner and had to travel in a direction and watch for stars moving in parralax to discover new things, i felt like i'd just found something someone else may not have because i went in the right direction.

I've just spent an hour with the new update getting to grip with the controls (always a bit painfull in vr with all the Hotas buttons used for something else) and when i got fed up i pressed F8 to get back to my ship .....which is where i should have been all the time, it was nice to be back.. not in that netherworld that is not ship nor space.

I understand now why Mr Braben was playing down the future of VR in this game, But i believe this could all have been done from within the cockpit. I dont mind travelling great distances to find new planets and then use the detailed surface scanner.

I WILL give it all another go, I've been playing since beta (well more tweaking than playing since i got vr), but i feel dissapointed tonight.

In general I found the system a great improvement on the old.

You can now detail scan a system of 40+ bodies in minutes and get a rough guess as to what types they are as well just by looking at where on the spectrum signals are.

And they have added the surface mapping mechanic, you still need to go there to get the mapped marker and the added bonuses for that.
This is also how you find surface features etc.

Overall a great boon to the entire exploration mechanic which for me was so dull I wanted to stab my eyes out whenever I tried leaving the bubble.

But yes, This should not have been made into a limbo space, it all could have been integrated so well into the ships HUD.
This is just lazy and honestly a bad game design regardless for how we play. VR or not.

Rubbish.

In the past I have spent, quite literally, hundreds of hours flying aimlessly around looking for a signal that may or may not even appear at all.

The fact that that's no longer a thing..even if that was the ONLY thing the new fss changed, is enough for me.

And would be for anyone who actually played the game more than fiddle with VR settings.

Yes Indeed

I agree, I did not know why, but I feel sad since I played ED yesterday.
I am an 3 month new casual player, I really like ED. I find it relaxing to play, it is diferent, it is huge.
I play it VR and will only play it in VR. (No more fun with the "tiny screen things").
I was looking here for some solution to use/configure the new exploration tools but I realize reading your post it will be like the galactic map:
you go there because you have to and exit with relief a soon as possible.
So the new exploration tools seems a second pain in the ... for the VR player.
Since one of my main focus is exploration, I imagine passing most of my time in those 2 interface won't do it for me.

It is my first feeling, I have to investigate further of course.

Greetings to all

Wow... While I'm not the biggest fan of the FSS, for exploration, it's way better than before. You now can actually find things. To say this is a combat focused update... I don't even know how to respond.

Oh yea, the mechanics are a huge improvement.
Before going further than maia made me want to stab my balls with a dull fork just to alleviate the boredom, and I have been all the way to colonia, in beta scanning a system was nearly fun in comparison.

But still this should have been fully implemented from the cockpit, it's a case of so close and yet so so far off the mark.

I've mixed feelings about this.

FSS is definitely quicker than having to fly around each planet / moon, certainly if it's a large system. For small systems, full of ice bodies ( which I didn't bother with ), it definitely is slower.

You can then choose which bodies you want to surface scan. It definitely is easier to find things.

My problem is: it takes you away from the cockpit and it fragments the game. If it used some mechanism that kept you in the cockpit view, I'd be fine with it.

Yeah, the good and the bad of it... I can't wait until I get home this weekend. I already bought a black Friday for the Phantom... I'm going to take her mining straight away!

FSS is a drastic improvement over what was there before. I cant disagree it feels a little weird to disconnect from the ship during the scan, but I liken it to going into a VR experience in the ship, where my visor has been augmented with an external view of the ship. Could it be a little more immersive? Sure. But I don't think anyone has an issue with external views of the ship being immersion-breaking, since everyone loves having the external camera.

I could get on board with this but I think there needs to be a nice transition from ship to augmented view. Its the little peices and final touches that are missing which stop these new features from joining up with the rest of the game and make them feel bolted on.

So you want exploration to suck again.

Right, I don't think this is gonna get far

No i dont want it to suck nad i never thought it did anyway. I was saying i enjoyed it but i'm not saying that this isnt a step forward or worse than what we had. As i said i havnt got to grips with it and will give it another go.

What i am saying is i think there could be a better way to implement it into VR , like in the wave scanner in the srv or a hud.

before jumping we are warned in red if you go to a potentially problematic system, now we are blind for a while and are a perfect target of any aggression while you explore and now that we have an alien threat, we leave the ship helpless putting it in disarmed mode

You can double up the bindings. Having something else bound to a button on your HOTAS is irrelevant when in the FSS, you can reused buttons for everything except enter/exit FSS.

And you said nothing during the beta why?

And you said nothing during the beta why?

Because i've not been able to play during the beta.

Let me just ask you this.

Do you like the way the FSS pulls you out of your ship to discover stuff or would you rather be in your ship looking at a panel or a HUD???

Hopefully there is nothing in this simple question to nitpick at.
