FSS has just ruined it for me.

I am just going to ask here to ask other VR players..

Is any of this needed just for signal source hunting?

I don't get the new Exploration system.. and flat out can't use it. I'm sorry if that sounds stupid.. I tried.. I just hate it and can't make it work in VR. I want to skip it all together, but now I can't seem to find Signal Sources for Engineering. When I jump into a system, there are like 10 USS in my contacts.. but if none of them are what I am looking for (HGE for example) I'm just screwed. It doesn't seem to spawn more then what's in there initially so now I am stuck.

I got the mode switch to work so I can do a basic 'honk' of the system.
I have a key binding for 'open discovery' it does nothing.
I opened the FSS.. and @#$ that.. I don't get this stupid thing and I don't want to map all new key binds for it.

All I want to do is be able to get mats from Signal Sources. Am I going to need this horrible system to find them?

Again, I apologize to those who like it.. I am not bashing on you, I am just frustrated. I have followed along with everything so far.. I took to Elite initially like a fish to water, I am usually the one that explains stuff to all my friends but frankly, I find this new Exploration system unreal difficult to understand and I want nothing to do with it.

Thanks for your time.. make fun of me if you wish.. I get it. :)

Recommend hooking fss into voiceattack while in VR. I control it near completely from there. Enjoy it in VR!

I did that, it opens FSS and nothing is bound.

I have to get up the motivation to sit down and figure out all the key mappings for this new tool I never wanted. lol

As long as I can still find Signal Sources without the FSS, I will most likely just never use it. I never liked Exploration to begin with and I like it even less now.

Here's another one if anyone's come across it ...The FSS finds say 24 signal targets in a system of which, 16 are bodies. What are the other 8 signal sources and how do you find them? Anyone come across this it seems fairly frequent.

Yeah, at minimum bound zoom in and zoom out in voice attack for the fss. Makes life easier. Step zoom, I have on the hotas along with tuning. Also moving fss is on hotas stick and twist.

Like many others, I came to Elite to enjoy space in VR. What I have come to realize is that amount of extra plug-ins and websites required (not optional if you actually want to do stuff).

I don't understand why making the game more complex will do to increase the uptake, you will just die slowly like eve-online.

Fun = simple and effective user interface, one of the reasons the iPhone took over the world when it came out.

It's a real shame, I'm not going to try and change the world, I will just look to play something else. A game is actually meant to be entertaining, not a grind and not a require a masters degree in Elite gameplay to get on.

The biggest mistake made by frontier in this game was the inclusion of the advanced discovery scanner.......It took the exploring nature out of exploring, and this whole fss update seems to be trying to combat that mistake but to the detriment of VR.

I actually miss the days when i only had a basic or intermediate scanner and had to travel in a direction and watch for stars moving in parralax to discover new things, i felt like i'd just found something someone else may not have because i went in the right direction.

I've just spent an hour with the new update getting to grip with the controls (always a bit painfull in vr with all the Hotas buttons used for something else) and when i got fed up i pressed F8 to get back to my ship .....which is where i should have been all the time, it was nice to be back.. not in that netherworld that is not ship nor space.

I understand now why Mr Braben was playing down the future of VR in this game, But i believe this could all have been done from within the cockpit. I dont mind travelling great distances to find new planets and then use the detailed surface scanner.

I WILL give it all another go, I've been playing since beta (well more tweaking than playing since i got vr), but i feel dissapointed tonight.

You are totally wrong. If you say exploration is flying from planet to planet click and scan with DSS you missed something.

Now in Q4 exploration is way better than honking and DSSing planets... Now you seek with FSS planets with that you are interest, you fly to them as ususally you did and send a probe to reveal POI or land etc.

Personally I’m loving the new exploration features. Much more immersive, easy to find features, more variety of features, means something when you scan stuff.

MUCH better.

USS are now persistent. I'm not sure if this means more won't spawn as you fly around the system but I don't care personally because I love this change. Now I can jump into a system and use the FSS to seek out each USS and decide which ones, if any, I want to pursue further.

But I realize you're asking how to avoid using the FSS, and I think the answer is that you just go back to the old-school way of doing things. Except it's still easier than it used to be, at least your left panel now shows the location of these USS and you now just have to target and cruise to each one of them to determine if they're of the type you're looking for.

EDIT: Apparently scanning the nav beacon reveals what all of the USS are, which would be faster than messing with the FSS. Source.

And they also do refresh, the timer runs out on each one and new ones will spawn. So if you are looking for mats that spawn in a particular system state, you could go to a system in that state, scan the signals, none there, go to another in the same state, by the time you come back new signals will have spawned

Oh is that the timer that pops up on the upper-right corner when targeting a USS now? Good to know! I personally love all of these changes.
