FSS reminds me of...

I finally got to play last night. Thanks for sorting it out Fd. I started to get to grips with the FSS and the new DSS. I quite enjoyed it to be honest, and found it a lot more involved than the previous.

I always found original system was very detached from anything, just being a pure point my space ship and click a button kind of experience.

Now in my minds eye, I feel more like Mr Spock in the original star trek looking down into the scanner through that viewing port on the consol.

I find just the opposite. I liked having to actually fly to the planet to get the credit for it.
I'd have preferred the FSS to be an overlay on your hud.
At least you could then fly towards a planet while getting its detail and still have control of your ship.
This would justify the dual hud mode mechanic.

However I like the short range scan that gets info on all moons of a gas giant once you are close enough. Not quite sure about it being fully automatic.

But then the surface scan missile system is also flawed. Couldn't you just fly round the planet with a ground radar? It'd be more interactive having to fly a path to efficiently cover the whole surface.

Maybe these features are on their way.?!

When I was young (once !) my parents bought me an old short-wave radio to play with ... it had knobs to twiddle on either side and a tuning scale ..... and now the FSS 😞
