Newcomer / Intro FSS scan question

I've noticed something peculiar when FSS scanning undiscovered systems.
Upper left corner I see the number of bodies (remaining), to the left of it "signals detected".
Once the FSS scan is complete (100%) the "number of signals detected" always remains higher than the number of bodies. No signal sources can scanned nor listed.

Obviously this number is telling me something other than what I assumed it was.
What exactly am I looking at then?

I'm not equipped with an FSS at the moment, as soon as I get back to dock I'll hop into my DBX and check it out. (I've been away for the game for a month or so - I've forgotten a few things.)
However, what I think you're seeing are surface signals - geological or biological signals on a planet. Once FSS is complete, you'll need to fly close to each body and probe them - you'll find surface features that can be explored.
Hope this helps!

It's my understanding that every ship comes with an FSS scanner. I think your getting confused with a DSS scanner. I don't DSS scan (mapping) a planet unless it's earth like. You definitely have to fit a dss scanner.

But i think your partially correct regarding FSS scanning an entire system. When you focus with the adaptive zoom you can find out much about an object (atmosphere, composition etc). This includes probably of geological items and how many (not their specific locations on said body). But, it takes a lil more of a wait (sometimes a minute) for the "fine tuning scan" to complete.

I don't bother waiting. There's barely any cash in the wait. Why bother?

My guess is that could very well be the signals I'm seeing. I'll put it to the test soon enough.

Here's a bad shot (sorry for the fuzziness) of an FSS scan that found a moon with the "likelihood" geological activity. You'll notice in the upper left corner that is doing a "refining scan" to verify.
On this particular one it found 13.

The system actually showed 14 signal sources, 23 bodies. Not including 2 asteroid belts (those never count (for some reason)
Once my FSS scans were 100% complete, only 2 bodies has geological activity, yet the number of signal sources remained at 14.
