FSS scanner and Surface Scanner problems

The Surface Scanner isn't meant to show Materials (eg iron, carbon etc), but Geo Structures (eg Fumaroles, Vents etc).

Not sure if that is what you meant?

It doesn't show any thing , no Fumaroles, Vents or any thing. 1 planet showed only 2 human signals but nothing else.

Can you show what the FSS results are for that planet?

Does the FSS show Geological with a number under features? Which version of the game are you using - Live or Legacy?

DSS doesn't show geo features as signal in contacts since 4.0/Ody. Geo features now occupy potentially large swathes of the planet and are show by the distribution map like bios. You fly into the distribution zone and find them with eyeballs.

Yeah I think a confusion between the old and new method, there are no POI's in Odyssey/Horizons 4.0 for geo, but there are for human and alien signals, the geo works just like the bio in Odyssey, just a blue colour where it can be found but no yellow PIO circles, use the filters in the DSS to swap between different types, mind you with volcanic the distribution is nearly always identical.

In FSS when you zoom into a planet, it shows what geologic mats are present and at what %

Yes, that is MATERIALS not FEATURES, which is what the Surface Scanner shows. Every planet and moon has materials, only some have geological features.

I assume that you are using Live not Legacy, or what you see will be different.

as you can see on the left pic (FSS scanner) it shows the mat on the planet. the right pic is the DSS and doesn't show anything about the mats

There are no volcanic sites on the planet, where is says NONE is where that info is found, if it says none, there are none, the FSS says there are "minerals" not volcanic sites, you find mats by using the SRV and scanner on these planets, and that list is what you may find, but there are no volcanic sites! See this image in the top right hand corner where it says bio and geo but where yours says none, now that's the old Horizons version, the new one will say a max of 3 geo and show a blue location map on the planet where you can find them but I didn't have a handy pic of that;

so I just have to fly down to the planet and search for them?

I think there's some video tutorials around for searching using the scarab, here's one from Obsidian Ant, the actual driving around prospecting starts at around 13 minutes, but keep in mind you might be better off skipping these bodies and looking for ones with vulcanism, but you can get mats from them, it's how we all started out many years ago as the only way to get mats!

The easiest way to farm raw materials is to go to the planets listed below, they are all about 1500 light years out so bring a fuel scoop. These have crystalline structures where all crystalline clusters will drop a single, grade 5 mat. You fly down to the surface and you will see the structures, they look like pointy objects, these are what you are looking for, shoot the clusters off and scoop them.

The darker blue color is what you will look for and the structures seem to be prevalent in the hilly or mountainous areas although on HIP 36601 Planet C1A I found them on the open plains. Because it's in a mountainous area, I would recommend that you use a small or medium ship because it can be hard to find a landing spot at times. You can only see them from like 100 meters up, going slow, night vision helps, even in daylight. When you land, you will see a double band, high up on the scanner screen, these are what you are looking for.

I haven't been to all the planets, missing the last couple of them. Before you go, visit a material trader and trade down all grade 5 mats. When you are done, you will have a full suite of grade 5 mats that you can trade down. Enjoy!
