FSS with a mouse?

Not sure if this is "exploration" as such but it seemed a reasonable place to ask.

I normally use HOTAS but have packed it away for an upcoming move, so want to use mouse for a bit. (but wanting try mouse for a while anyway, I'm getting lazy :) )

But the mouse in FSS mode either seems unusable or I'm doing something wrong.

Even on the highest sensitivity it takes ~20 full mouse moves to turn 360 degrees, after just a few systems I can feel the RSI setting in.

I did try the "mouse power curve" a bit further down but you just get this effect where the mouse still moves really slowly for much of the hand move before it kicks in meaning it doesn't really fixe the problem as such, still many hand moves, but you then also get this disproportionately high acceleration kicking in making it feel horrible and quite unintuitive as well.

Any ideas?

I replaced the mouse by a trackball, so I don't need to make the device travel the whole room to scan a system... That works really fine.

I find my mouse is tolerable on the highest setting. What's your frame rate as it might be tied to it? (can't remember)
FSS mouse sensitivity is inversely proportional to frame rate. The higher your FPS the less sensitive it is.

You can try capping your frame rate or turning vsync on to get the mouse to behave...at the cost of increased scan times.

Good Lord it's true!

And you are saying that scan time is linked to framerate too? So you either have fast scans or useable mouse not both. 😟

I have a MadCatz mouse (sadly out of production). It has a variable mouse sensitivity, using just one rocker switch.
It's needed to cope with both normal flight & the FSS.

Is it possible to set up a keyboard macro to adjust the resolution?

What an awesome idea, and yes it works.

My standard is 1000dpi, set alternate to 16,000dpi. Set my ED to cap at 300hz (I'm slightly above that normally). Works a treat 16,000 is way overkill on max mouse sensitivity, so I can now decrease sensitivity below max, now at ~ 66%.

I spose this means fast scan times too. :)

Really crap my mouse speed will be variable depending on framerate but as long as it's hitting the 300hz cap should not be any variability. Also a bit crap I now have an extra button press but it'll do.

Gotta say I am enjoying exploring mouse over a HOTAS now I have the mouse dialled in.

FSS is the main time consumer in exploration, with a fast mouse you can do a 30 body system in a <not that much more> amount of seconds, this isn't happening with a HOTAS.

Yes once I discovered the mouse was so much better than hotas I didn't look back.

The game was originally targeted for HOTAS primarily, and with VR support in mind for the interfaces too. Then came the FSS, which was obviously designed for KB/M or gamepad first, and with VR forgotten. (See how it was there in the first beta.)
The FSS was rushed out so quick that the devs who designed, made and approved it either forgot about this, or just didn't care and wanted to be done ASAP, with the lowest effort possible. Targeting the most common set, so at least it works for them.

And well, this...

...just speaks for itself.
