FTL: Advanced Edition

The free update came out today:
FTL: AE is free expansion to FTL which includes a new alien race along with new events, weapons, playable ships, drones, and more! It also adds additional musical tracks by Ben Prunty, and events by Tom Jubert and guest writer Chris Avellone.

If you own FTL on Steam it should automatically update the game to the newest version, v1.5.4. If you instead own a DRM-Free version of FTL, you need to re-download the game from the original location and then re-install it. The following link has more information about updating DRM-Free versions - Update Instructions [www.ftlgame.com]

Additionally, FTL has also been released on iPad! It is the complete game (same as PC) and includes the new AE content. It costs $10 in the US Store and is available on the App Store worldwide. Note: FTL purchases on computer cannot be transferred or redeemed on iPad.

I'm looking forward to having go later!

Yeah, I'm really looking forward to having some time to play this. I interviewed the developers a long time ago requesting a Hard mode - great to see this now make it into the game!

I got as far as the boss in normal a few times, but was always roundly defeated. Hard mode would probably be totally beyond me. Too much time spent playing action/racing games, rather than using my noggin.

Just remember to pause constantly and use stealth at the right time :) I've beaten the boss more times than I can remember, including on various challenge runs. In fact I think the only time he's beaten me is on attempts to win without buying any ship upgrades (Mantis B is handy for this). Oh, and that one time I did a pacifist run up to sector 8 in the stealth ship and then had nothing left to do but suicide against the flagship.

I've only ever beaten the game with the Engi ship, but I've only ever played on 'normal' (now on 'hard').

I like the new encounters/quests/music/equipment/race, makes it feel like a fresh game again. Although I've not yet used the new systems, mainly because I'm sticking to what I know works. I should probably experiment a bit.

Thanks for posting this!

I had no idea there was a free update. Hard mode will definitely keep me busy until Elite enters a more affordable stage of its life cycle. :D

I love the Advanced edition.
Still have only 3 ships available to me though.
I know you can read online how to get the others, but I don't like that.
Is there any in-game rpg-like way of knowing how to get the other ships?

EDIT: Found it

I wish I wish FTL had coop multiplayer. That would be SO epic. I'm so sad it does not -.-

I've found the game works really well as local coop actually. One person pilots, and the copilot points out all the things the pilot inevitably misses. "Missile!" - "watch your O2!" etc. Lots of fun :)

LOL, I had an x-gamer (There are such things aparrently?) mate round some weeks ago showing him ED and we both realised that we played Elite on the C64 back in the day exactly the same way, as you describe. With a friend, one piloting and the other pointing things out and hitting buttons on the keyboard as required.

Some things never change, brilliant.

I've just updated FTL on Steam so I shall give the new version a go.

So much for early nights! ;)

I just updated FTL on GOG direct download and I had completely forgotten how to play as I have not played in such a loooooooooooong time.

HAd to go through the tutorials all over.

So are the advanced features good ? I activated them when I started but have yet to notice the major ones.

The advanced features are very good, especially the hacking, the mind control, the new race and a number of the new weapons. It makes the game more complex, mind, which means many more things to account for an remember. Easy to adjust to when you know the game well, but coming fresh it could perhaps be a little overwhelming.

I love this game on the iPad. Have not activated the advance stuff as I feel there is still lots for me to unlock on normal.

I have beaten the boss a few times so have a few new ships but am no where near good enough to win each time Darren!

I think I need to be your padawan!

I don't mean to necro res, but FLT is awesome game both on iOS & PC and the modding on hte PC just adds more just doubles the awesomeness :)
