fuel/cargo hybrid modules

often times when i'm trying to build a ship i'm finding my self torn because i really don't need that much cargo space but i also need a cargo rack, on the other hand i could really use extra fuel, given this things weak stock fuel tank.

so how come we can't get cargo rack/fuel tank hybrid racks,

modules that are half cargo rack half fuel tank

like size 5, 16 cargo, 16 fuel vs 32 cargo or fuel for a normal module

size 6, 32 cargo, 32 fuel, 64 cargo or fuel for a normal module

size 7, 64 cargo, 64 fuel, 128 cargo or fuel for a normal module

honestly i think the size 7 one would see the most use, most people who don't bulk trade probably don't need 128 tons of cargo or fuel but having 64 of each would probably help them out alot!

I could go for this, especially on exploration builds.

I like the idea, but I think the obstacle to this suggestion would be the necessary logistics.
Usually cargo rack placement gives no consideration to access to the ship's fuel lines, but it would be needed with these hybrid modules, and it would be hard to make the case that it's always going to be technically feasible.
But then there are reportedly plenty of logic/reality defying elements in the game that I wouldn't really hang up on this one tbh, so I'm not opposed.

Now, if space legs were implemented such that we could walk into our cargo bays, grab a tank of fuel, drag it to the ship's fuel tank and fill her up, I'd be far more excited about additional uses for the cargo bays.

The optional internals has a raised floor that the tanks lines run under and the computer pumps fuel into the main tank from the sub tank when it gets low

What is your ship build? You can always buy a fuel tank and the problem would be solved. Another idea is work on Engineering so you have a longer jump range. Let the devs work on ideas that are more worthwhile.

+1 for S.P.I.N [haha]

I predict if this is implemented the next request would be for a half cargo/passenger module, followed by half fuelscoop/shield module, then a half shield/fuel tank then a half....well you get the idea, it's just module splitting but with restrictions and we have plenty of threads on that already, it's a never ending mess once it starts!

None of those make sense though

A fuel scoop/ fuel tank might but i can't at a glance see a logical way to split the capabilities.

This though is a storage compromise that allows bigger size slots to be of greater practical use to more people.

You have a point, but the underlying principle as I understand it, is the practical use of cargo space.

While it may be feasible to convert part of a cargo bay into a passenger room, the notion of a fuel scoop/shield module or a shield/fuel tank module doesn't fall under this category, and as you mentioned, is just module splitting played fast and loose.
Holding to restrictions that have a practical basis when deciding what to endorse is what prevents things getting messy I think.

But taking your point on board, and S.P.I.N notwithstanding, I would probably steer away from using anything in a cargo bay that needs to be connected to the ship's systems to be utilised (other than lighting, plumbing, and life support, which the ship's cargo bay would/could have anyway).

But while a passenger room in the cargo bay would be technically fine, I think OH&S safety concerns would be a good enough reason to disallow it. A connected fuel tank would also therefore not be practical, but a fuel tank in ship storage that would have to be outfitted at a station, or physically moved and used to refill the ship's tank ala Space Legs (if it ever comes), would be no problem however.

Still have not answered the question. What type of ship do you have?

Here what you did not think about your idea. When a pirate takes your cargo. using Pirate Hatch breaker. What does the fuel go? I think the current way is just fine. We don't need it changed.

When players going I have 128 cargo and don't use it all. Well, Collect another Trade mission to fill the cargo. On my Trade ship, I would collect about 5 to 15 Trade missions.

This isn't about what type of ship i have.

And during piracy nothing changes because they steal your cargo not your fuel anyway.

And again you are using bulk trading missions as an example, for non bulk trading uses a good chunk of the cargo room goes unused while still others could use more fuel space instead but still need cargo room

Yes it has merit to the topic. A large ship you can buy a Fuel scoop or Fuel tank. Without adding an unnecessary idea.

With your hybrid Rack I would say explosion. So I see it not a very good idea. If or when they add walking around your ship people are going to want to walk everywhere on their ships including Cargo areas. Which means your idea would fail because our ships use hydrogen as fuel.

And again you are using bulk trading missions as an example, for non bulk trading uses a good chunk of the cargo room goes unused while still others could use more fuel space instead but still need cargo room
My point was not Bulk trading. But I collect Multiple smaller Trading Missions. Which can exceed the amount of cargo space. Just a example. I have a ship with 256 cargo. I accept 10 Missions 5 having 20 cargo each Total of 100 cargo and 5 mission with 35 cargo each total 175. So 275 total Cargo So I would have to go back for the Other 19 cargo.

If it's not for you it's not for you

that doesn't mean it's unnecessary not everyone trades in large numbers even as smaller quantities of many things.

Some do less but are forced to choose either fuel or cargo when not alot of cargo is needed but more fuel would be a great benefit

This isn't about a single ship build so i won't post mine and i would kindly ask that you stop attempting to derail the thread as such.

Stop trying to inject common sense into ED's build philosphy.

It's the same as to why the military slots can't be utilised for fuel bladders or extra cargo as well (despite it being a very common modification used by many modern military today) - Game stuffz.....

By viewing your profile I don't think you played Elite Dangerous for that long you got it on sale. I think you are missing a lot of key info. Maybe not read the manual or communicated on the Newcomers Introductions Forum for basic info.

Now me asking about what your ship is to help you. I have 3 accounts I paid for a new one around the same time as you. Right now it a Type 6 Engineered 18 ly jump range laden 109ly total. But all the Missions I am able to drop the mission off and refuel at the station or use one of the Size 2 Compartments for a fuel scoop just in case. I rarely ever use it. But I check the Galaxy map before I leave the station. There also Engineering and the right Ship setup.

You might think your idea great. But it not needed. This game is about Choices and not lack of choices. Sometimes you have to choose what best for your build and buying a Fuel scoop or an extra Tank is the best idea.

this idea is a choice a choice to give up half your potential cargo for more fuel.

this idea may not be for such an individual as yourself with such well established routines but it is needed

It's a game, the players don't care if it makes sense, if you can have a half cargo/fuel split why can't they have a half cargo/passenger split. It gets to the point of why even bother having larger modules at all? If you take that cargo ship and give it two sixes instead of that seven, or four sixes instead of that eight then you also have exactly what you want, even better because then you can choose at any time to have either all fuel, all cargo, or half and half by just changing the load out of the modules. In the end it comes down to this, ships are defined essentially by what modules they can fit, and once you start playing around with the module setup you start blurring the lines even more than they already are. Bigger slots are designed for cargo carrying, so a cargo ship has more bigger slots.

No, if you need this to make your ship more suitable for the use to which you are putting it then then just maybe you are flying the wrong ship.

Choice and consequence is at the core of ship outfitting - and, as has been already mentioned, module splitting has been asked for before - for some years.
