Fuel cost so much - questions for the fuel rats?

Why does fuel cost so much?

Filling up a ship cost so much more than buying the same amount of fuel in cargo?

Will we ever get a refund for the last six months of what seems to be over charging?

Should I raise a ticket? I think I've paid close to 100m credits in over priced fuel maybe more... I just don't know

Will the fuel rats help me back date my claim?

Retail should always more that wholesale

Of course during 1.2 fuel prices were less than the Commodites market prices by about a 1/3 so if you push for a refund, expect them to back bill you :p

Previous tests

Just refilled a Lakon Type 6
Needed ~7 tons to refuel
(need just under half a tank of a 16 ton tank and round up to the nearest ton; used the refuel 10% at a time to judge)
Cost to Refuel 339 Cr
Cost of 7 tones of Hydrogen Fuel at Commodities Market (94CR per ton buy price HIGH supply) 658 CR for the 7 tonnes
Station Faction Neutral

Even if Hydrogen is Plentiful why is it cheaper to buy fuel at the pump than it is to buy wholesale.
In fact paying 51% of the price

Test 2
Just refilled a Lakon Type 6
Needed ~8 tons to refuel
(tank of a 16 ton tank and round up to the nearest ton; used the refuel 10% at a time to judge)
Cost to Refuel 392 Cr
Cost of 7 tones of Hydrogen Fuel at Commodities Market (116CR per ton buy price MEDIUM supply) 928 CR for the 8 tonnes
Station Faction Neutral

Refueling costs 42% of the market price

Fuel, expensive? Really, Ben?

Your ship is a magnificent beast capable of traversing truly vast distances across the heavens in mere minutes - even a Sidewinder! And you're complaining about feeding it?

I don't even consider fuel cost a blip. 500cr for a trade run in Anaconda/Python... 100m cr would be 200,000 trips!

The trade commodity vs refuel price disparity might be down to different grades. CMDR ships are pretty high-performance after all, and you're being re-fueled, not just buying a bulk commodity.

I flew to Hutton Orbital in an FDL once, and the wear and tear from that trip alone was ten times the total fuel cost I've paid in since I started playing 10 months ago.

It's the taxes.

Fuel is expensive? Have you forgotten the Olden Days? You had to seriously ponder of losing like 16-32 tons of cargo to get a fuelscoop in your python or anaconda because fuel was more expensive than the best possible profit coming from that cargo. For a distance of no more than 30ly.

I don't know if you where flying a python or an anaconda in the old days where refuelling them with decadent gold-laced fuel was really showing off your wealth... :D

Some people miss those days. I don't. I am happy with regular non leaded hydrogen.

Fuel is so cheap that I don't use my fuel scoop unless I'm going on a station out of my fuel range: the time lost refueling is not worth the money saved... actually if you're trading the time lost may even cost you money if you're calculating your credit/hour ratio.

Try to explain this to your local gas station. I am eager to know if they give you a discount.

Or the government. Since you are just transporting the stuff, you obviously aren't using it for fuel, so you don't have to pay fuel tax. Hence the cheaper price. :) Sounds crazy? That's what can happen in real life as well.

An example: in Finland you can buy light fuel oil from gas station. That fuel oil is meant to be used in agricultural vehicles, bulldozers etc. and it doesn't carry fuel tax in its price like all other fuels do, so it's cheaper. Basically that stuff is diesel in everything but name. They just add dye in it to distinguish it from regular diesel. Now since it's cheaper, everyone would use the stuff to fuel their regular cars, right? Nah-ah government has decreed that it's illegal to use it in regular diesel cars. The dye is put in so that the fuel will stain your fuel filter and tank when you use it and makes it easier for authorities to prove that you have tried tax evasion.

With the fuel rats just giving the stuff out for free, it makes me wonder if you could get a refund!

You clearly haven't read the fine print of the contract that you have to sign when you use the Fuel Rats service ...

Hey Ben, take a look at your local (real world) pump price! Or your leccy/gas/dual fuel bill! Do you think 3000AD is going to be so different? We're in hock to Big Hydrogen!
