Engineers Fuel Scoop - Shielded Upgrad - What does it do?

So the only fuel scoop upgraded is shielded, integrity increased along with power draw.

What does this upgrade do?

I only need to upgrade my fuel scoop if it is going to scoop more fuel!

I think a whole load of Cmdrs inc me, will be thinking along your lines.

Exactly!

I only need to upgrade my fuel scoop if it is going to scoop more fuel!

^Exactly^ Have some rep. Maybe if I could fit a less massive Fuel-scoop and have it perform on par with the A-rated version, get a LY or two more jump range.

With an A-rated Power Plant and pips to SYS I can scoop all day . . .
At max scoop rate?

I can scoop all day if I set out at measly 200 (units), but if I'm in towards my max scoop rate heat will build up fairly steadily. I'm at about 100% heat by the time I'm approaching a full tank from 1/8th of a tank.

OP, have you never been in a situation when an enemy selects your fuel scoop and obliterates it? Then you'll appreciate what's offered here.

:D

Nope, the last thing I'm worried about in a fight is my fuel scoop. And unless you play in Open or a PVP oriented private group you will not have to worry about your fuel scoop being the focus of an attack compared to more important subsystems.

It levels your rep with the engineer with some ingredients that you might not need, so you can get them to do useful things.

I can scoop at about 80% (which is about 800/s) all day long flying parallel to the star. I also found out that this is the sweetspot for most ships at about 80% where my ship is at roughly 65% heat.

Yeah... I don't understand the need for half of the upgrades they've added. Collector limpet controller upgrades, Make them move faster, or maybe hold two items per drone, or I donno... add more drones?

I am really hoping these new engineers are just placeholders for future content additions, because right now most are completely useless.

Hmm, with an A rated power plant, A rated class 6 or class 7 fuel scoop, and the appropriate engineer upgrades I can usually obtain 100% scoop rate while sitting around 50-65% heat depending on the star type.

I agree with the sentiment here. The latest batch of module mods seems a little bit copy-paste rushed, IMO. Thank goodness modules like the powerplant and FSD weren't treated this way!

It does nothing. A rated fuel scoop with A rated PP and thrusters means you can sit at 65% heat and get maximum fuel scooping.

Agreed, if you hit the sweetspot and don't push the rate to the absolute max you can scoop for a long as needed without your temp going over 64 - 68%

As to the OP, no idea!

Agreed, useless upgrade. And yes, they were a bit too "copy and paste happy" with the upgrades available at the new engineers. I guess there might be some place holders for future upgrades here.

For a fuel scoop, I can see only three useful upgrades:
  • Increased maximum scoop rate
  • Reaching maximum scoop rate at greater distance from star, thus reducing temperature
  • By some special filtering and treatment of fuel, increase jump range
