Newcomer / Intro Fuel Scoop

I just want to say this has changed the game for me. I didn't fully understand what people meant by it. I finally got it figured out and figured out the rares route. I had a lot of problems trying to dock with a hauler during the rares trip because of interdictions. Finally decided to put a deal on my hauler and just hunkered on the stars and scoop when i could. Once got an interdiction attempt when I was scooping but I hit the vector and got out cleanly. Felt like a regular Han Solo. Gonna escalate to black market goods soon I think and fund the rest of the toys for a viper and a type 6 I think.

Fuel Scoops are very handy if you are planning a trip across the galaxy, heading towards community goals or just fancy a new home base somewhere. So long as you don't run across a bunch of brown dwarf stars in a row you can pretty much journey anywhere safely :)

Get the best Fuel Scoop you can fit and afford. That cuts down the time needed to fill up. And if you aren't scooping from the edge of the star try that. You can maneuver away to reduce your temperature then when it starts to drop maneuver back to increase the scoop rate. The last think is keep your eye on the star in the radar so you know which way to go when leaving. Don't move towards it on the way out.

Fuel scoops cost you time and credits/hr. They're a waste if you're trading.

The profit lost from the slot that the scoop takes up and the time lost scooping outweigh the benefits of having a scoop.

That's only true if your tank is big enough to cover the entire trip. Having to fly to a station halfway through your route to fill up takes a lot longer than scooping.

I'm not sure I'd recommend getting the biggest you can though. Even an A2 is fast enough for most ships and you're only losing 4t of cargo capacity that way.

I don't understand? It's taking up a 2 cargo slot. You have to plan stops accordingly to hit separate docks along the way which factors in to wait time already. From my POV so far there isn't much difference bewteen a proper fuel scoop and having to land at a new dock to gas back up before relaunching and jumping back in to space and getting on with your route. And hell if you screw up and run out of gas in a series of deadzones.

At any rate, I'm not concerned about efficiency. The immersive value of the fuel scoop is enough for me to want to use it :)

i think what is ment is when trading you normally go from A-B back and forth and normally no more than 2-3 jumps each way and you can make more using the room for trade than using it for a fuel scoop which is true in that sense.

Ah! I don't trade. I got scunnered during Beta. I see your point though.
I do rares where I want to travel over 140 Ly fast. So it is different courses for different horses.

Ah I see, well I guess that's where teh confusion lies. I did mention in my original post I was doing rares trading which was anywhere from 160 to 210 ly as far as jumps went.

As for /regular/ trading, yes I agree in this case the fuel scoop is worthless. After a few rare runs last night I managed to buy myself the Type 6 and got it fairly kitted out. I've got 100 cargo space on it now and have a B rated Class 4 FSD which serves my purpose just fine as I have scouted out a 2600cr loop and make about 1.5mil an hour currently. I currently have 2mil credits, of which i generally tie up about 800k at its peak in trades. I was debating upgrading to the A4 class 4 FSB which would bump my laden jumps from 15.65 to 19.12, which I have not yet had a need to. As one of the systems I am using to trade out of has that FSB on hand I've just kept it as a card in the pocket to decide on using at a later time.

I may go ahead and upgrade to a type 7 before I purchase the FSB however. Still undecided on that.
