Fuel scooping like a Boss

I tend to try and find the sweet spot by approaching the star slowly until the heat stops rising and then just sit and throttle back to 30m/s. Takes a while to get the right point, but you should be able to get your intake of fuel fairly stable and hold the heat at exactly 100% indefinitely with minor corrections on the stick.

I've been able to sustain around 25-30/s intake of fuel with zero heat damage for as long as it takes to fill my Cobra's tanks :)

More like the inefficient poser way to scoop fuel. Looks pretty but creates way too much heat for the fuel yield and takes way too long. Fun? Yes... Like a boss? No. ;)

Like an actual boss. well done sir! That is how you scoop in style...

On a side note, anyone got any nitty gritty on the pseudo-science behind the mechanism of fuel scooping? What is it you're siphoning off, and how?

Id assume it's plasma from the sun... how? Well the year is 3300, you will just have to speculate that one ;)

I doubt it is plasma, as that would only fill up a battery. It is likely any helium isotopes, or heavier elements the star is producing in its current phase, carried along with the coronal ejections. However that would provide nuclear fuel for the reactor, it wouldn't provide anything to your impulse engines as ionizing off your reactants would be a horrible waste, and probably creating horrible clouds of radio-activity within stations. In the future I think we can expect two types of fuel to be needed for ships depending on what type of reactors and thrusters you've got. It could be anywhere as crude as chemical propulsion, to ionization, or even a form of limited supercruise for those super fancy ships.

I think the answer is the same as the one Gene Roddenberry gave when he was asked how inertial dampeners worked on Star Trek - 'Very well, thanks.'

The Maelstrom method of scooping fuel:

Nice but unnecessary. You can reach 20+ fuel intake rates at ~100% steady heat without even having to encircle the entire star. Just need to find the sweet spot and then stay level and slow. :p

Aren't you just trading the cost of fuel for a repair bill on your modules that you took above 100% heat?

Maybe it works different on larger ships with better modules... I'm still playing with my Hauler and Eagle.

I think damage starts at 150%, and the OP was staying just under that. You get the audio warnings earlier, so you know you're approaching the red line.
