Fuel scooping question.

I searched the threads and read a lot of posts, but didn't come across an answer so I apologize if there was one....

I have fuel scooping down to a reliable procedure, but I have found that when approaching some stars, the fuel scoop won't deploy.
I'm not talking about brown dwarfs or the red stars, I'm referring to some yellow stars and some white ones. No matter what I do, I only end up with heat damage warning.
One time (using advice found on the forum) I dropped into normal space when I got too close creeping toward the star expecting the scoop to deploy.

So my question, is this a fairly normal situation? It only happens about 1 in every 4-6 stars so I'm not worried about being able to fill up.

When I had it set on priority 2, I noticed that it wouldn't deploy as often as priority 1, so maybe my fuel scoop is tired?
I do tend to keep my tank topped off (I ran into a series of brown dwarfs and thought I would be lost in space once).

Thanks for any feedback.

probably not too helpful but I have never had this problem. I have not done anything other than added the fuel scoop and later upgraded it.

Possibly the blue/white stars you were trying to scoop from were T-Tauri stars... They can look similar to A/B/K/M class stars but they are not scoopable afaik.

What type of fuel scoop have you got? What does it max out at when scooping? I had an issue with a small one but not at the moment with a more expensive one.

Sounds as if you've tried scooping T Tauri stars. The trouble is they look very similar to normal stars but can't be scooped so the only reliable way of finding out is to scan them if they aren't already mapped.

Some stars are unscoopable. My usual way of scooping is to make a mental note of whether my scoop deploys when I frame-shift in. Since it starts me off heading toward the star, Job #1 is to avoid face-planting in the plasma. So I pull my course to graze the corona, while I am heading outbound until the heat drops. If the scoop deploys, it's scoopable and I head out then slow down and loop back for more after the scoop puts itself away.

I have an A scoop in my cobra. Usually I try to balance where I am at 95% heat, with the throttle slightly forward. I get about 30-35 mumblemumblewhatsit units on my scoop. If I balance it right I can throttle all the way back and the heat stays at 95% and I can go brew a cup of tea.

All I know is avoid neutron stars.

An inattentive friend, (ahem) blew up his cobra trying to get close enough to scoop that sucker.

Hmmm sounds like the one I had some issues with.... I upgraded and mine scoops at about 50-55 mumblemumblewhatsit units. it could be coincidence though!

Note that the fuel scoop only recharges your fuel cargo - not the "active" tank.
So, if your cargo is still full, the fuel scoop will not deploy!

You know that you can throttle down to zero during the jump and come out facing the star but not moving, right? You can actually throttle down as soon as she starts counting down from Four. Coming in at zero speed, you can sit there for long, long time waiting for the system to render, scanning the system, detail scanning the star, etc. I doubt you can sit there literally forever, because you're still moving at minimum supercruise speed, but several minutes at least for even the biggest stars.

There are some t tauri stars that look just like say a K class star but are unscoopable.

Just remember 'Oh Be A Fine Girl Kiss Me' for all the scoopable types (the first letter is the class type)

My basic fuel scoop has worked fine, unless I'm stupid enough to try scooping TTauri stars (I got to hate them at one point on my first exploring trip<g>)

As other posters have said, colour means nothing, only the Type ("FOG KBAM" is my favourite memory aid for this, kudos to Cmdr Nutter's explorer vids)

Have Fun,
Jintosh

Yes, thanks to Cmdr Nutter for "FOG KABAM." That acronym immediatly solved my "which stars are scoopable?" problem.

The thing that's nice about oh be a fine girl kiss me is that it is in correct spectral order so it's somewhat useful in real life also

NO!!!!! I did NOT know that!! OMG!
Seriously, I must be the dumbest explorer ever!

I'd hug you if you weren't just a bunch of pixels on an LCD panel. Because I'm on a slow T-1 line, when it's downloading the instance sometimes my continuity stutters and the game winds up planting me in the star and doing a ton of damage, before it's finished downloading. So you've pretty much just saved my career as an explorer.
