Newcomer / Intro Fuel scoops

It takes up 1x module.

The question is mass v cost,

In a sidewinder I am tempted to do away with weapons, scoops and just go for speed and cargo space as you may decide to make money and the xtra cargo space may be worth it.

if you are going long distances go with the scoop

I didn't get my first fuel scoop until I had a Hauler and was starting to do Rares trading.
.
For the Sidey I just stuck close to home, did some BH and missions as I learned the game.
.
Fuel scoops are situational, but never really a bad thing to have. Also, keep in mind that fuel scoops don't work on ever star type: LINK to more info.

Early on, I learned about fuel and its scoop by running out of the former and having to self-destruct.
Lesson learnt - now I (virtually) never leave a station without one :)

Thanks all!

Yeah, I may do away with my weapons for now and get the scoop and some extra cargo space. :)

Just got to find a station that sells it all! :(

The sidewinder has only three internal slots, so the only way to fit both a scoop and extra cargo space is remove the shields and the discovery scanner. Think twice before flying an unshielded ship.

Aye - flying unshielded is a bad idea. Would you go bareback with the guy/gal you met in Zen's on a Saturday night?

Didn't think so.

Exactly. And quite frankly Elite Dangerous is not Elite 1985 where you're total fuel allocation was 7.0 Ly. (of course in Elite 1985 every system had a base..so you couldn't get stranded).

For me, scooping is a luxury. It's nice not to have to pay for fuel, but since I am not on the outer fringes yet, I don't go through the heartache. A basic fuel scoop takes a tremendous amount of time to fill up your tank and on a 20T tank like on my Cobra, I would take for ever. But again, I'm never that far from a civilized station and never let my fuel get below half.

If I were mining asteroids on the fringe, or with our intrepid explorers out on the edge of space discovering new jumps, then that would be a different sotry all together.

It is not recommended, but then again why not? If you are certain that your routes are safe -- no pirates, you don't drop into anarchy systems, don't get interdicted -- then why not? Free up that extra internal space for more cargo spaces. I have been going without shields for weeks now.
Just be sure you have a great thruster to boost your way out of trouble IF you ever encounter into one.

Because it's not always your own fault when something goes wrong.
A tiny bump from a NPC or similar can bump you into a wall and explode if you're shieldless.

Oh!? Can't I fit a scoop in a weapon slot?

Nope - each slot type is fairly specialised. Fuel scoops will only fit into internal compartments.

The reason why doing away with weapons can help is that your jump distance is restricted by your ship's mass, so anything you can take off gives you a little more range.

Fuel scoops don't actually have any mass, so they don't restrict that part.

If you are going to buy a scoop, do buy a better one if you have the cash. Better scoop = faster refills.

Sitting still near a sun waiting for your tank to fill before jumping away can get boring and dangerous.
