Fuel Tank Expansion Module?

1.2 brought us, in addition to wings, Shield Boost modules and Hull Reinforcement Modules.

That last one got me to think. Why not add a Fuel Tank Expansion Module option for an internal slot, working in a similar fashion to the hull reinforcement one we just got.
trade an internal slot for more available fuel and added mass.

I could see this useful for explorers and some ships with small fuel tanks or to ferry a ship to a far away system to establish a new trade route or wing up with friends after dropping the extra fuel tanks again for something else.

What are your thoughts on this my fellow commanders?

Given that explorer ships often have unused modules to save on jump distance I like the idea of having some extra tanks to fill up, before entering a dense cluster of brown dwarfs.

That would be good, but I'd be more interested in an additional power module. Perhaps taking up a size 4 bay it could give you an additional percentage of power capacity based on the level. Perhaps 5% for an E up to 25% for an A rated one. That would mean that you could tailor your ship to the role you want more finely.

I think a generic "A+" module would be fabulous, rather than having individual "power enhancer" "fuel extender" etc. How about an A+ module, which can be applied to exactly ONE module already fitted. It would extend the power of that module by 15%, providing a 10% decrease to some other aspect of the same module. For example:
A+ applied to FSD. 15% greater range. 10% recharge rate decrease.
A+ Thrusters. 15% greater accel/decel. 10% slower boost recharge.
A+ Fuel Tank. 15% greater capacity. 10% lower jump range.
A+ Shields. 15% more defensive power. 10% slower recharge.
As it can only be applied to one module, it can only be bought, sold or switched in High Tech places. Cost would be exactly equal to the module it is being applied to, so not cheap for A-class on any ship.

I think it would create some differentiation, especially for A-class maxed out ships. For example. a Cobra with this fitted to the Fuel Tank would become a better long-distance rares trader, fitted to the Shield Generator or Thrusters would be a better bounty hunter etc.

Am up for any modules that give more choices. On the flip side do we need fuel modules? My T9 can do around 2000LY on one tank in ECON Mode, and ASP or even small tanked clipper can cover a huge distance in Econ mode, combined with a fuel scoop it is near impossible to be stranded. even covering vast regions with stars that cannot be scooped.

i wonder if i can shove a better fuel tank in the clipper's class 7 slot. now that would make exploring much easier without having to refuel at EVERY jump. unless of course it goes in the utility slot, but even then the clipper has 4 slots for that so it should be just fine!

it will make moving the Ferdy around from hotspot to hotspot much easier for me... whenever i make it back from Sagittarius A* that is :p (and no, i went in an Asp)
glad to hear its not a rumor i haven't read the newsletter just yet

A bigger fuel tank would also reduce the jump range. If it would allow the FSD to use more fuel per jump and thus increase the jump range I'm all in!

Really guys?! If you're so interested in the game, at least pay attention to the DEV updates! This was already confirmed for 1.3 (PowerPlay) update:

For ship customisation you will also be able to fit more than one fuel tank to your ship – although this obviously takes up space you could have used on other modules!

Here you go!

if you note then I initially posted this thread, over a month ago. I simply am a happy camper its happening :) and i been out around Sagittarius A* for a while, not followed the forums very much since. thank you though for the quotation.

Well i didn't mean to offend anyone! :( But anyway, keep an eye out for them DEV updates, regardless of what you do ;) :D

Larger fuel tank is smaller jump because of mass... it is better to have a fuel scoop with mass 0.
I am curious about jump range boosters - it would be extra for exploration.

I suspect most of explorers won't use the extra fuel possibility that much due to the reason you stated. That being said, I prefer I prefer a shorter range and more fuel-autonomy under certain circumstances, like crossing a cluster of unscoopable stars. But yeah besides that more range + good scoop is better.
