I think it's about time that Frontier figured this out. They've created a game players are spending thousands of hours on. On these timescales players are certainly going to change platform here and there. They ought to be able to transfer their complete save. There's no risk for the company here- we're buying another copy of the game, probably re-purchasing cosmetics too. Implementing this system would incentivize those transactions.
Just because it's easier for you to tell your support staff to transfer a credit balance doesn't mean it's a good solution. It's been half-baked for far too long. Make a conversion script. Implement a $5 transfer fee or something if you have too. Nobody wants to lose their major/minor faction reputation, ranks, their materials, engineered parts, powerplay parts, broker parts, community goal rewards, crew, ships, loadouts, discovery data, visited system data, etc. Credits are the least important part of the equation. You could have have a system in place where everything except credits were transferred and that would be preferable.
It begs the question of why the pilot files are stored in different formats in the first place. Maybe it's high time they all be converted into one format, and then you can let commanders switch back and fourth between platforms based on who they want to play with on a given day and it will keep their progress.
Seriously. This is a no-brainer. Pick a universal format. Write a conversion script. Take the game offline for a day and run it. Then people like me can install it on the PC and give our xboxes to charity. It's weird keeping it around just because I found a game I liked 5 years ago when that's all I could afford. I've gotten raises since then. I would like to play in VR. There's no way I'm going to start from scratch though, so I've been sitting here waiting for you guys to figure it out.
