Fun in the Gun(ship)

My new favourite - the FGS with a ship launched fighter :) Once the pilot gets to a decent rank (Tommy Compton just hit Master and now he can hit other ships too! It just seems to push all my buttons at the moment - if I want to fly something super agile I just hop in the fighter and if I want to be inside a hull tanking beast it's back to the mothership.

Being able to get right up to another ship and see it get skewered by every gun on the mothership is a beautiful sight, especially when their power plant has gone and they can only sit there as their hull gets shredded by scars of molten metal.

Now the pilot's at master, he makes better use of the thrusters than me, but pretty terrible use of the weapons - he generally opens at max range with all of them, instead of just three Focussed pulses. I also wish he'd make use of the KWS if he's not under fire, ideally scanning before shooting first... Perhaps those sorts of options will come in time.

Incidentally, the weapons capacitor drain on the SLFs is immense, justifying their claimed OP damage. Even with 4 pips to weaps it's gone in a second, which seems pretty much spot on to me.

It really is an impressive ship to be sure, and medium-sized so it's a great go-anywhere, do-anything craft.
 
FGS easily became one of my fave ships. It hits a legendary balance of maximum entertainment, br00tal effectiveness, keeping me toasty on FA-Off, and suitability for responding to CMDR fire.

Unless you're like me and get caught pants down with a ship load of modules for engineering in enemy PP territory. Accepted the fight on that anyway, absolutely did not win. Four unengineered rails and three unengineered cannons was going nowhere against fully kitted out FDL.
 
For me the FGS feels like a mini-Corvette. Using common weapons it is pretty good. Using different weapons in combination per KWS, lasers, M-Cs, cannons, PAs, rails, mines etc it is awesome but requires a lot of fast fire group switching. Oh, for the desire of a 3rd fire button! :)

If your SLF WEP capacitor is draining fast, can I assume you're using a beam laser? If you trigger a heat sink, you can fire for the entire duration of the sink's action.

Pulses - Taipan Aegis. I might try the Gelid F with Beams then, or since the mothership is all lazors, perhas the Condor with multis. Anyone tried the plasma repeaters?

I have a C6 Fighter Hangar in my FGS. I use 1 Empire fighter with Beams and 1 Empire fighter with plasma repeaters. Both are good fun, plasma is decent against shields but does good damage against hull if you can manage a full burst to hit.

Love my FGS, been flying her for about a month and still learning her subtleties of flight mechanics for combat (Drift FTW!)

Yup, blind ;) Five shots.

Two of them were on lower ammo to start with and so were the only ones to need reloading.

They probably wore them two down more than the others by firing without enough distributor power, which will cause it to fire as many as it can without using more energy than you have.

lol yep. Blind. All five fired. And while low distributor power can certainly limit shots, I have some other hard point binds that let me fire only certain PA's, so it's not unusual for them to have various amounts of ammo, or for me to fire the whole salvo more than once, but have one or two or three PA's reloading on the second or third salvo.

As for Boosting around.. Grade 4 Dirty Drives on 6D Thrusters because it's a long flight out to Palin in a Gunship. I also use a HOTAS setup and G13 pad and a lot of custom keybinds.

I used my python to do the thruster upgrades and had 2 additional thrusters shipped to the station in Maia. Stripped down the python has a decent range to it.
