Fun systems for an explorer newbie

Are there any fun or interesting systems for a newbie to explore within 1000 ly of civilized space? I'm still on the fence about heading boldly out there into the unknown, and I figure a test run to interesting systems close by would help me get a feel for what to expect.

So far, I have heard of two systems worth going to: HIP 47296 and HIP 63835.

Do you have a system to recommend? Please let me know the name, and why you like it!

Betelgeuse - the star's HUGE!

Word of warning: have A-rated powerplant and a heat-sink launcher if you're going to scan the innermost planet...

Nebula are always worth visiting. Pleiades nebula is close by, only around 500 LY from Sol. The Maia system within it has a black hole.

Planetary nebula (single system stellar remnants) have some of the best visuals. Both the Spirograph and Dumbbell nebulae are around 1,000 LY from Sol.

Thank you, thank you for all the great tips folks!! I finally have a bunch of goals to push me out the door!

And somehow I was thinking there wouldn't be anything worth checking out close to home... :)

Thanks again!

One thing I would say is that the view changes a lot as you approach the core. Although the individual systems may not be that different, the backdrop is always changing.

First Black Hole

So I swung by Betelgeuse, and then on to Maia. And here is my first black hole in Elite Dangerous! :)

I figure I will stay a while in the Pleiades to see what other sites it has to offer... And then I'll move down the list, perhaps on to 4 Cygni!

Thanks again for all the suggestions!

Nice thread Cromo and thanks for the suggestions everyone.
I'm gonna go for sightseeing very soon. I'll start with with Maia system. I've never flown in a nebula before.

See you around space cowboys!!!

My first exploration trip went to Pleiades. Thought Maia sounded cool and a nice name for a girl, so of course that was my first destination. Little did I know that there was a black hole there and I got confused with all the distorted light passing through my canopy. My tools? Poorly outfitted Cobra(600K maybe) with a basic discovery scanner. Took me hours to locate the black hole(BDC was useless so I had to rely on watching the heat go up or down).

That was an amazing trip. Not worth much money, but I had never seen black holes in Elite before, finding it was a big challenge. This was when you could only plot 100ly and I could only make 19ly jumps lol. Memories~
