Fun With Repair Limpets!

I've had a lot of fun recently, getting a cargo-ish ship (Keelback's fun for this, but no fighter "allowed" - makes you too strong), and playing as a support ship for miners in Haz-RES's. Pop in a repair limpet controller, cargo rack, and stock up on limpets. To make myself "feel" the role more, I put on some turrets and lower-end weapons instead of anything decent.

From there, I'll basically patrol the miners in the RES. If someone's in a fight, I'll help them out. When their hulls get low, I'll fix 'em up (because those morons will go happily back to mining with 3% hull). I "lose" for each miner that dies.

Not really a smart way to play if you want to make money, but it's good fun. I'm not sure how it could work, but it would be neat to see missions from local factions where you have to protect their miners like that.

Does anyone else have anything like that, where they've made their own mini-games? Do share!

Lol genius. :D

I have a similar "protect the miners" mini game when Res hunting.

I'll actively defend the miners, even if it means ignoring what's attacking me.

I should bring repair limpets along next time, because they really do go back to mining with 3% hull.

And sometimes hit a roid and blow up...

Lol

But it's good fun, and keeps you on your toes, with SLF ordering Kung Fu, and evasive manoeuvres while trying to attract as much attention as possible.

It's inevitable you'll lose some (because they don't leave to repair, ever!). But it's good fun, and adds a good bit of challenge to what is normally dull combat loops.

I tried it with live newbie CMDRs once.

It didn't end well.

Sort of tried this last night in my new unengineered FDL. Popped into a HazRez to peruse through the wanted ships, see if there was anything new I wanted to try and pick a fight with. I happened across a wing of 2 NPCs: a Python and an FGS.

Thought, “heck no” and went looking elsewhere. But before I got very far I noticed that the pair had found a poor DBX to pick on, and for some reason I just snapped! I knew it would be a very one sided fight but if I didn’t intervene, they’d shred the DBX in no time.

So I swooped in and started unloading right up the Python’s engine exhaust. I figured maybe if I could deal with him quickly enough, I would still be alive long enough to fly out of the gunship’s range, regenerate shields, and come back and beat him in a turning fight.

Didn’t pan out that way. They had my shields down before I could drop the Python’s, and I started taking hull damage. That’s when I came to my senses and started boosting off into the asteroid field popping chaff. They gave chase but I was able to use the densely packed asteroids as cover, and I got away. The gunship quickly fell off my sensors but after I throttled down about 15 - 20km into the field, I noticed the Python was still steaming for me!

I let him close in and played peek-a-boo around an asteroid for a few minutes to give my shields every kJ of juice I could, but in the end he bested me and took my canopy down to 50. At that point I had to jump away, but I like to think I gave the DBX pilot just enough time to escape before the pair turned their sights back to him.

That's brilliant!

I'm going to have to do that once I'm done with my current mission.

I once tried to be sort of a fuel rat for NPC's, but then I seldom saw any distress calls and gave up. :p

Great idea for the Mission board. We could use more like this.

If I ever get back into playing, I'll try it out.
