[FUN] Would you play Elite Dangerous if, as with 1984, you could only fly the Cobra Mk III?

Sure, I can and do get along alright in one, even with the game as it is.

If I came to E|D with that stipulation then yes. Absolutely.

But having had the chance to fly many, many ships I'm not sure I could now restrict myself to just one, even the mighty Cobra III.

Absolutely...wouldn't change my playstyle massively...IO spend most of my time in an Asp or a Viper anyway (except for Thargoid hunting...or if I need to do some heavy lifting for my Minor Faction)
So yeah good to go...
In some ways it could be BETTER as Frontier would scale Missions/Enemy AI etc etc solely to the Cobra

Don't get me wrong though; my fully combat loaded Vulture explorer ship is a nice luxury to have now and then.

Definitely. Wouldn't be as fun though, unless they went more in depth with ship systems, customisation, ability to walk around the ship.

If we knew nothing else I'm sure we could have started ED with just the Mk 3.... There would be threads on the forum about,

"Imagine how awesome it would be if we could pilot an Anaconda."

And other people would say

"Nah, it's a waste of resources when they could be focussing on the core game, like exploration, trading and crime and punishment."

I'm surprised that they didn't start CQC with just Cobra Mk IIIs and basic weapons upgrades. Now that is balanced fight honoring the Elite tradition plus learning a great ship to fly in the regular game.

If you'd said "Asp Explorer" I'd be game. The Cobra... well I don't hate it but it really doesn't stand out now that you can Engineer. It used to be the hot rod of the galaxy, one of the fastest things in space... now you can't count on that, and it loses a lot of its luster.

I mean the game could still be fun, but it loses something without the other ship options. Part of why I loved X3 and never even played X4 Rebirth.

I actually did that for more than 3 years.

I started* the game in my Cobra Mk III "The Dancing Groigan" and have been flying it mostly** exclusively from Gamma in 2014 until October 2017 (When I bought an Anaconda).

* "Independent Trader" tier at the Kickstarter: something sounded right to me about starting the game in Lave with a Cobra and only 100 credits. Before Gamma, I already bought a Cobra during the Beta.

** Except for briefly trying out the Viper Mk. III (basically to see how the chrome skin looked on it), the Vulture, and picking up my Free iEagle and parking it at Jameson Memorial. I never used my Freagle (except if you count selling it as "using").

Probably. If everything else was still a thing. Horizons, etc. But I've got to admit that I wouldn't have gotten into combat as much. Would be across the galaxy right now. :3

Honestly I would.

Don't expect this to be a serious thread. 'Tis just a laugh.

But would you?

No.

I tried the Cobra III and it was way too delicate and twitchy. Horrible experience. I kept it for 3 days and dumped it for the far more stable and tough Viper Mk IV (which has similar optional internals).

To be fair, my opinion of the Cobra may have been more to do with my dying game pad (it was over 10 years old). The day after I dumped the Cobra I replace my game pad. I might try the Cobra again, but in my mind the Viper still looks better.
