Funny, good-natured griefing: is it possible in Elite: Dangerous?

Once in awhile (not constantly) winning a fight in a game like Street Fighter by spamming one combo/special-move and hearing your character saying “hadooooooken” like a broken record, or hiding in one spot in a FPS and building up a pile of bodies, until your friends realize where you’re hiding is funny. They might swear at you, but they’ll go after you twice as hard to get you back. And it doesn’t hurt anyone, and they’ll normally laugh at the end.

Is it possible to grief (in a funny, non-toxic, good-natured way) in Elite: Dangerous, without being seen as obnoxious or like a jerk?

Short answer YES!
I typically do it in a hull tank hauler with one laser.
Interdicts them with “Suprise Combat!”
Then have a macro that every time I press the fire trigger it says “Pew Pew” in chat

10/10 its a good wholesome time!

"Funny", "non-toxic" and "good-natured" are pretty much excluded by my own personal interpretation of "griefing", while "obnoxious" and "jerk" are activated.

But then, words don't mean anything in themselves, the act of attributing meaning to them is an intersubjective process of co-construction undertaken by their community of users, so what do I know.

I tried that once. I was attacking "hostile" players (PP) at a CG in my "Battle Dolphin" LOL. I alternated my loadout between rails and dumb fire missiles, taking on Type-6, 7, 9s. I never destroyed anyone, as I only do that to true jerks, but I gave them a good thumping. In fact, I remember knocking a newer player's engines out, and I actually sent him a message explaining how to reboot his ship to get his engines back.

Unfortunately nobody seemed to find it as funny as I did at the time... One person in particular lectured me to death, even after I explained to him the rules of PowerPlay. I even got some hate mail via PSN!

Still, it was great fun :D

You should interdict them with a macro that says “Suprise! Dance party!” And start flipping your Hauler all over the place. That would probably get some laughs.

I'm going to say no.
Because your standard FPS or a game like street fighter, you have nothing to lose. Unlike in elite, where there is some loss occurred upon death. Not just credits, but potentially cargo, data, missions, time.
So because there is some impact to death, whether small or large, I don't see much of the community finding anything entertaining with 'good natured' griefing.

Personally I like random player interactions. But based on what I've read in these forums, I'm in the minority.

I once pulled a noobwinder in eravate, and forced him at gunpoint to deliver a ton of narcotics to maine hub. I was flying a vanilla cobra 3.

He was literally day 1, I had to talk him through via voice comms how to scoop cargo (he crushed the first ton) and also how to land and how to sell at black market.

So sure, I was pulling noobwinders and using them as drug mules, but he seemed delighted to have someone help with basic in game training ED is so lacking (although I do think they have a built-in training video including scooping). He also got 10k credits free, nothing to me but probably useful for a day 1 sidey.

However if that medium pad had scanned him, he probably would have been made boom boom by station.

Another guy, he kept ignoring comms and running, and I kept fsd resetting him until he finally stopped. I made him yaw-pitch-roll so it looked like "Z0" and also type "Z0" into chat, and then sent him on his merry way at 12% hull. I thought that was funny, don't know about him.

There also used to be the shapsugar bus (or something like that) years back he posted some videos. He took a dolphin or orca around and interdicted people for trivia questions. If they got it wrong, he'd have 3 murderhoboes in his wing shoot at them. I found it hilarious.

No such thing as "griefing" being good-natured. By principle, it's sole purpose is to grief. You should uh...probably hit the books again and relearn what meanings words have

Get engineered up. Like in real life someone will kill you. Some wnker in a car. or someone with a knife, or a nasty animal like this dog with their owners when I was working at at station and I went to stroke him he bit me. "oh good boy" his female owner said. I said and pointed at the dog "NO" then told her, "if that does that to a child. it will be put down"

It happens, sh happens

By my standards griefing isn't possible in Elite Dangerous, so good-natured or not doesn't even come into play.

I went to a CG once, in my Python, and there were station rammers in force, trying to take out anyone speeding.
Having gotten bored of docking at 90m/s (it's sooooo slow!), I decided to take matters in to my own hands.

I requested docking permission, and cautiously flew to the back of the station, and waited.

When I saw a CMDR in an Eagle take off, and grind their hull down, I snuck up behind them and "booped" them at 10m/s to blow them up.

Then return to the back of the dock and wait.

Got them about 5-6 times before they realised. :D

Very much, yes.

First off, I'm talking about unprovoked, non-consensual, surprise PvP here. It's ALWAYS okay to bounty hunt, run BGS protection, intercept rival Powerplay members or pirate players - if the other person doesn't want that, they shouldn't be in open. What fun would trading be if there were no risk of pirates? However even people who welcome pirates and other legit PvP activities tend to dislike randoms attacking for no reason, particularly when the aggressor has nothing to gain 'in game' from doing so.

Having said that - random aggression can still be amusing for both parties if you're cool about it.

* Communication is key
Broadcasting something shows that communication is open and you're not just there to ruin their night.
A persona helps. Lighthearted goon (like Zaphod above) works well, as does the a highly territorial duke claiming an area of space... something light.
If you have to be edgy you can go driven mad, like a firefly-style reaver. If you do, bonus points here if your reaver ship has the raider ship-kit.

* Level the playing field.
Don't use a fully engineered 'Vette or FDL. Ideally fly something silly (T7) or smaller (Cobra, Adder, etc). Chances are you're going to out match the random open-play yobbo anyhow, and what challenge is ganking someone in a fully engineered cutter?
Try things like adding Rails to an adder, or fully engineering a Sidey. Jump in a Keelback with only shields and punk them with a fighter.

* Ideally aim to humiliate, not destroy
Losing a rebuy can really hurt. Instead look to disable thrusters and FSD. Maybe pop the cargo hatch... and then don't pick it up, so they have to faff about picking it back up themselves. Remember: Annoy, not destroy.

I feel like, if you roll with those ideas, unexpected, unprovoked PvP can be a interesting memory and fun experience for all involved.

Get engineered up.

You can't do that with just the base product. Engineering should be a bonus, not a requirement.
(Side note: In the original proposal randomly engineered modules were going to show up at 'normal' stations for a premium. Whatever happened to that idea?)

Like in real life someone will kill you. Some wnker in a car. or someone with a knife, or a nasty animal like this dog with their owners when I was working at at station and I went to stroke him he bit me.

Let's go through those examples:

> Some wnker in a car.

In general that driver was either not paying attention or you walked into traffic. The other drivers aren't hunting you in customized killing machines.

> or someone with a knife

It's pretty rare someone with just start stabbing (although it does happen - stay off drugs, kids). Normally they just want money or it was part of an existing dispute.
Note I support PVP pirates and Powerplay/BGS PvP, so that's... fine.

> I wass working at at station and I went to stroke him he bit me

Ever heard the saying, "let sleeping dogs lie"? Yeah. Do that.

If this was the case in Elite, I don't think there would be a problem... Accidents happen, piracy is okay and if you hassle a big-dog that doesn't want to be hassled you'll get bit.
But in Elite it's not an accident. The people ganking aren't just after your wallet. And those dogs are out biting at random.

Its not possible for griefing to be funny or good natured "the act of irritating and angering people in video games through the use of destruction, construction, or social engineering." That said it is possible to have a friendly PvP but most people in this game dont want to do it voluntarily because they dont want to lose there credits.

Maybe pop the cargo hatch... and then don't pick it up, so they have to faff about picking it back up themselves. Remember: Annoy, not destroy.

My goal grief is to one day pirate a void opal ship, have them drop a bunch, make them wait, scatter mines all around the floating void opals, and tell them they can have their opals back if the use their scoop, not their collectors. All with appropriate comms villainy of course.

It's hard to find void opal haulers though on ps4.

Griefers are not into good-natured fun. They're into mining salt, because that's fun for them.
Those who left bubble to follow DW2 are great example. It's not about anything else, but ruining game for others. They're into one sided practical jokes.

If you want to have fun, but don't want to hurt other person's feelings and can stop when you see it's not fun for them, then you're not a griefer whatever you do.

Therefore not everyone who attacks others in Open is a griefer - There were those who attacked me without a word, but when I wasn't defending and spoke instead, they left me alone.
I even managed to get away with hauling cargo to CG in shieldless T9 that way. Not that I would mind- I was doing that exactly because it was risky. I had prepared "Maybday!Mayday!Having outbreak onboard.Disease transmits by being shot at!Keep your distance!"
message and surprisingly it worked :)

There are also those who gang up on players to make fun instead of shooting. Some demand to tell them jokes for example. As a matter of fact it was my first experience with being ganked in Elite, so for about five minutes I thought it was really neat community ;)

That's great. Yeah I probably would have let you get away, maybe strung it along a bit for more lulz. "Is it space clap?!?! They are selling penicillin in Eravate!"

Last shieldless T-9 I pulled from a CG instead comm'ed "Ugh, RP'ers" so he didn't get away.

Depends on what this weeks definition of griefing is.
