Funny Inconsistency With Odyssey Suits vs Life Support

If your life support or canopy is destroyed you have anywhere between 5 and 25 minutes of life left depending of the grade of Life Support (7.5 minutes with the most common D-Grade). If you're wearing a Grade 5 fully engineered Maverick suit and have 3 power cartridges on board then you can survive for hours on the surface of a planet. You're also wearing the Grade 5 fully engineered Maverick suit in the ship.

So why do we either suffocate in our seats or need to constantly synthesize air assuming the materials are available instead of relying on our massively grinded Grade 5 fully engineered Maverick suit?

indeed, handwavium, of many sorts but let's face it, a minor inconsistency in updating the game to such a level is kind of a quibble. I do think it is a Quibble that needs Addressing, like perhaps auto-switching to flight suit while piloting and in stations (thus allowing all those wasted ARX that people spent on flight suit cosmetics to actually enjoy them on foot) also there are SO many things broken right now, I hope they get it all done (including addressing the game immersion quibbles)

It already was invalidated before the new suits. Realistically there is no reason why someone should only install a 25 minute life support module on ship capable of carrying hundreds of tons of random stuff. The obvious answer is gameplay or 'just because' as you said it.
 
You know these force fields stations have to keep the atmosphere inside? Unfortunately our ships are too small and don't have enough power to support those. But you know what is big enough to use those? A freaking door!

this, 100%. You ditch your backpack when you sit down and plug your suit into the ships Life Support.... I mean, have you tried strapping into a 5-point harness while wearing a re-breather?
The backpack is for storing stuff and mounting the thrusters. The suit life support is a distributed system made up of many small components located in the suit material itself.
 
nope, the backpack is for everything apart from guns. The suit is way too fitted to have anything other than temperature and pressure control!
The helmet, chest piece and boot soles have lots of space for life support tech. Or I would imagine that you could still put the backpack on and just lean forward in your seat. Looks like FDev needs to step in here and confirm one way or another.

I can confirm the crash couch in my Cobra was built pre-odyssey, so doesn't have the backpack cut-out in the backrest, if that's any good for ya? Mr Braben isn't answering my tight-beam, to give an official response..... Sozzzzzzz :/

Long answer:
I guess it's to do with available space, maybe? A Remlok mask is alot less volume to pressurize with breathable air than (even just) the ships cockpit. You could suffocate yourself with a sodastream if it's localised to your face, but empty a sodastream can into a room and you wouldn't even notice the difference.
You could maybe say the technology in the suits environment system could be alot more expensive (due to keeping it so small), so might not be scaleable to ship sizes - that's why a suit can cost over 5x the price of a small ship! The ships environment is done by a pre-pressurised tank (refilled when you dock), while the suits make breathable air on-the-fly!
 
It's just a gameplay thing. Our suits don't have realistic times either - modern-day rebreathers last 6 hours - but I do think the mechanism is a bit janky.

The ship's emergency air is pre-Odyssey and could be handwaved as being a fixed air bottle, like the emergency oxygen in our suit backpacks, I suppose.

That doesn't make much sense. The air tank is located somewhere in the ship, our suit is connected to it with the joints you can see on the seats and the back of our suits. When the canopy breaks our visor gets closed automatically and we get supplied with breathable air. The ships are big enough to provide air that would last for hours if not days. The correct answer is still gameplay.
