Funny punishments

Why are there such ridiculous fines for attacking / destroying clean ships? Attack 400 credits, destruction 5000. Attacked a merchant ship - today you will be left without chewing gum. Destroyed a police ship - you will be left without a burger for lunch. Law-abiding inhabitants of the ED universe can sleep peacefully, a criminal will think a hundred times before attacking. In addition, clean ships can be finished off with a ram, as a result of which you will not even be credited with points of bad reputation.

It would make more sense if the fines were tied a little to a commanders wealth than just a low ball stock fine.

Well considering they massively increased bounties recently it baffles me why they did not also increase fines and bounties the other way as well.

"A clean ship ran into you running from pirates and was killed, you have been fined 5% of your account balance which comes to 500 million credits. This has caused your FC bill to bounce, thus it has been decommissioned. Thanks for your understanding."

Without a significantly more sophisticated fine system, there isn't any real way they are gonna make it work well without it sucking somehow. I'd rather the fines be a minor annoyance than actually punishing and get them for things that aren't my fault, as happens.

Well people always complain they have nothing to spend their cash on so why not introduce a fine system that sucks instead of one that only registers amusement.

Why not tie penalties to a percentage of the cost of the destroyed ship, plus moral damage.

There are a lot of innocent convicts in the real world, so it's okay if someone is punished for unintentional ramming in the game.

Victim restitution!

Excellent if you damage a npc you pay for their repairs and if you kill them you pay restitution to their npc families.

It's not always the fault of the NPC.
THOSE DOZENS AND DOZENS OF SO-CALLED SYSTEM SECURITY WHO FOR REASONS UNKNOWN KEEP GATHERING IN FRONT OF MY LAZORZ AND KINDA TAUNTING ME, AND NOW I'M STUCK WITH A 12 MILLION BOUNTY AND CAN'T DOCK WHO DO THEY THINK THEY ARE IT'S TOTALLY NOT FAIR AND WHERE'S DBOBE ANYWAYS

Actually it's alright that's only a few minutes of casual mission running in another system and my debts of crime are like poof

Exactly the threads complaining about the fine amount would be a refreshing change.

I actually happen to have racked up said 12m in bounties - took a fair bit of effort and I realised it really isn't a deterrent at all - multiplied by a factor of 10 or 100 it might start to make me think twice.

As long as the benefits of such crime could be equally rewarding. Crime at the moment is basically entirely unrewarded... if it's not meant to be done, should just disable damage for anything not a hostile.

As your notoriety goes up, I feel like your bounty per murder should be going up by a percentage of the destruction you've caused - ship and cargo included. I've always wondered how the heck the pilot's federation can stay afloat with this 95% insurance for ships, and this could be a good direction to justify it.

On a similar note - the bounties/fines associated with smuggling/assault/etc could be based on the economic value. Like, based on how much it would cost to repair the damage you inflicted, the value of the illegal cargo you were found with, etc.

However, we're still left with the matter of crime not being appealing financially. It's no wonder the anarchies are getting hit so hard. No matter if you're a bunch of assassins, peaceful smugglers or something else, you'll be earning far, far less credits than just doing it the legal way, though if you go that deep I don't think a 20 hour maximum should be enough to completely get you back to the legal side of things.
