Funny things happen when you don't play for 9 months

So I played Elite a ton for its first 6 months, eventually buying an Asp Explorer and heading off into the dark, with my first major destinations being Aldebaran and Maia as stops on my way out toward Betelgeuse, Rigel, and the various nebulae out "that-a-way". I was being thorough, scouting via economic routing to maximize the exploration data I hoped to bring back from the trip. My last play session back in June had brought me to just outside the Pleiades... and then I completely stopped playing.

This weekend I fire up the game for the first time in 9 months, somehow actually remembering how to play, and make my last 7 jumps to Maia... to find an inhabited system. Clearly I've been away for a while, but clearly I've got more catching up to do beyond remembering how to not crash my ship. Hashtag NoobAgain! lol

Yeah tell me about it!

11 months off for me (release of GTA5 on PC!) and I started back with Elite on Sunday just gone. I was surprised by how quickly I was able to get back into it, I did go through most of the training missions before climbing back into my Python, and it took a fair while to get my controls back to how they kinda used to be…

Clearly have missed quite a few updates, I got a terrifying shock when in combat the other day I hit a shield boost and thought I was going to fry up!

So quick question, shield boosters seem to have been nerfed into oblivion, so what do people do instead? (please be gentle!)

I’m still smarting somewhat from getting blown up last night, 8.5Mil to rebuy my Python :-( Two Elite FDLs in a wing, got the first, second one OWNED me!

The new PvP META is HRP/SR. SCBs have been deemed a "last resort" item, but pairing with heat sinks can resolve that issue.

Yeah, the Python took a nerf bat beating a few months back. It's now basically permanently on fire, if you even so much as look at a star, or fire a weapon. Not so good in combat any more.
The new combat ship of choice is the FDL (or FAS), it's had a boost to its power plant, and is pretty easy to kill with, and can do a variety of different loadouts for different styles. It's one of the few ships that can fire off a single SCB without exploding in a ball of fire. Lol
I pair 2x4A SCBs and a 3A SCB with a heatsink, and fire them all off together, for an almost instant shield recharge. Lol

Two more things that have probably had an effect on your play since you left and in conjunction with TheDayman here:

1. The Python got hit with the nerf bat and is not the beast it was before;
2. The FDL got a buff recently and now whoops butt, 2 elites in a wing is a tasty combo if they get the drop on you!
