Future features (suggestion)

Hello there,

I am quite new to these forums, but I played Elite since the very first one and I am most pleased to be part of the beta tester of Elite Dangerous. I've been waiting for a 4th part to be released for ages now.

I don't know on which forum I should post this so please excuse me for posting it on the wrong one, but I have a future suggestion for possible features to add to the game. Maybe it's already on the drawing table, but what I would really like to eventually experience, is when explorer discover a planet that is habitable, it's possible to build your own outpost along with defensive turrets from the outside, build your own refinery, farms to grow crops or fishing facilities in order to sell to galactic traders and merchants who happen to pass by. Have a purpose for exploring other systems to gather more resources for your base, explore local plant life for medicine, harvest minerals from the fossilized rocks in order to create even more exotic product and sell them for a real high price in the market.

That would have been a real nice addition to the game at some point. I would like to hear your opinion on this matter.

Hi Kanute, and welcome to the forums and this mad Elite community.

I don't think we will be able to own and build buildings in Elite Dangerous, it's not that sort of game. This goes for stations too I think.
 
So is the ability to build your own "small" stations by melting certain asteroids from the inside and then "inflate" them. :)

does those include land bases? or just space stations. how about creating your own space ports on the ground? dispatching units and NPC's to find minerals and resources for your market on the surface of the planet? not to mention explore your own base, training troops in a barrack to protect yourself from predators such as locals (Dinosaurs) and other alien life forms?
 
Features like this have been discussed before, but at the moment the only meaningful answer is - we don't know. The ability to create an empire, or even a small permanent base, was never a pert of the earlier games in the Elite/Frontier family, but then again that's no reason to say it cannot happen here.

The over-arching design philosophy is, and I suspect always will be, focused on the experiences of the solo pilot so as long as anything can be included that does not go against that principle then I don't see why DB would object. To know whether something "fits" in ED you just have to ask one question - is it something Han Solo ever did/would do? If the answer is yes then there's a good chance that the idea is one that would be positively received.

By extension I think it's also fair enough to ask - is it something Han Solo might ever have wanted to do? This is where the small bases/freeholds etc can fit in, but large empires? Still, DB keeps surprising us and has now mentioned management of large ships, so who can tell?
