Future of Elite+Paid For Content

Dear Frontier/The Community,

If we look at our setups for playing Elite, almost all of us have invested hundreds if not thousands in gaming hardware, decent PC, VR headset etc, almost all just to play Elite. And that is not counting the time which for most of us is in the hundreds of hours; for some in the thousands.

It amounts to a lot.

But how much does Frontier get? Right now Elite is on sale for a measly 5gbp. Sure we try and support by buying content like ship skins etc but that can only go so far. For Frontier to continue to develop Elite it needs money to do it. And I am really concerned, especially given all the time and effort I have gone into playing the game that the day comes they decide to stop developing the game. Or, horror of horrors, they close the servers killing the game for good. For these things NOT to happen, Frontier needs money from us.

I think we need another paid for expansion pass, like Horizons, which has a bunch of new ships/content maybe something else like jump gates that open up other areas of the galaxy easily or maybe a satellite galaxy like magellanic cloud or something. And its only accessible to those who buy the paid for content. I really dont mind spending another 40gbp on Elite expansion especially if its going to help the game develop and pay the salary of the devs who work on it, especially considering all the money I spent on hardware its a pittance really.

We need to think about the future and I for one am all in favour of future paid for content, in fact I think its a necessity to keep this game alive.

Signing off,

For that reason alone I bought a copy for PC.. though not altruistically.. more in mind that if I ever have a good PC, I'll be able to play it.

Given the fact I bought both the base game plus Horizons full price each (2 x 35 EUR) and subsequently, hundreds of EUR for ship kits, paint jobs (they once did cost 6 EUR!), COVAS packs and other stuff (better don't want to know the exact sum...), I think ED is a fair deal from my side as well. Then, they got a management which decides the pricing model and determined the Beyond season could and should be FREE. Apparently the game is profitable at least and FD can pay the bills, I deduct. Ofc it can't go on like that forever, and I'm absolutely fine with anything that is not based on monthly fees.

IMHO ED has more long term potential than Planco and JWE together anyway. Currently, you can get JWE for less than 15 EUR (75% off) and that's a game that's only some months old.

And FD seem to be quite healthy in general.

IIRC the JWE (Steam Gold top seller by revenue) cash flow is not even included there.

So many concern threads these days about the funding model of Elite past and future.

Have their shares crashed or something or is it the year end amateur dramatics/economists meeting?

I didn't spend any time in 2018 worrying about anyones financial position but my own and its highly doubtful I will spend 2019 worrying about anyone elses.

Havent Frontier said something about not doing another Horizons style expansion, but that they do plan on monetizing small individual new features players can decide if they want/need? Thought I read that somewhere.

I honestly wish it had subscriptions so that the game had sufficient manpower behind it to not be a jungle of bugs. Increased content would be cool too, but holy moly the bugs. Bethesda's bugs are more comical, but I'm not sure they would best FD in sheer plethora of bugs.

@OP: Don't worry, Frontier are already working on the next expansion, and there is no reason to think it will be free. Why would it?

They have said they are dropping the season model, but they haven't yet specified what the next model will be. They could go for piecemeal features as was initially planned before Horizons, or go for a more traditional big release once everything is ready.

The next big expansion is currently in development. In the meantime they are probably going to sell the mission packs. I also believe that this was the premium content originally planned for 2018.

How many milliDOOMs are we yet? I mean it's a new year already and still no paid content to be seen anywhere :p

Not really sure what they have planned.

What I do know is 3305 was supposed to be the year for this, but it's been pushed back again and again...

And 2019 isn't the year for this either, so I guess I can't fault them too much. ;)

Hopefully whatever they plan really fleshes out the game dramatically.

There will be both paid for and free upgrades (for all core stuff). When and how - we will have to wait for announcement Zac hinted last time he talked about Q4 release and features delay.

Not sure when these updates will come out though. But I think we will get an update soon enough.

They have other projects in progress, so expect 2019 to look like the year Planet Coaster was developed.

I think the next expansion will be purchasable, not sure what ur point is here?

The issue Frontier has (as I see it) is :
- They need enough content in the next expansion for people to be prepared to buy it, probably why some stuff got held back from Beyond
- How will they market the next expansion?
- What happens to Horizons now i.e. does it get rolled up into the base game?
- How many current players are in fact LEP owners?

Much depends on how the Beyond season performed to expectations.

This holiday period has matched exactly the expectations I had anticipated.
