FX17: No space legs and no atmospheric planets

After the main streaming this is the conclusion, there are a few upcoming features that are good but not enough, at least for me. They showed a roadmap until Q4 of 2018 and in the incoming features there were no mention to space legs, atmospheric planets and other features promised by FDev. I have the feeling that FDev refuse to compete. It seems like they have accepted the second place behind Star Citizen.

I'm actually happy their not throwing in spacelegs or atmospheric landings. It really shows that they're going to really focus on making the core gameplay better, which this game desperately needs more than another new, half implemented feature. Great choice IMO FDev. also, people have been screaming about the core mechanics since season 1, it's about time it really got adressed.

Star Citizen will become a competition once it's released. Right now it's just a tech demo and jpegs.

I'm actually glad they're not hurrying space legs and atmospheric landings because both need a huge amount of content to be created if it's done right. Throwing some half features out just to "compete" would be a shot in their own foot. I mean look at EVE Online and their space legs fiasco. Fdev would be wise not to repeat that.

I was on the Atmosphere band wagon before I saw this. What they are planning, implementing, fixing outweighs Atmo Landings. Plus you cant beat free .99

Like others have said I'd rather they fix stuff and expand current things and wait till they can really polish and deliver really new features.

Its also hard to have a competition with something you can even play. I got my SC money refunded, because at this point I dont ever seen it coming to light.

David Braben seemed downright giddy about upcoming things that would not be announced today (emphasizing the 10 year plan). I think someone at Frontier is working on one or the other, or perhaps both, but it's still in way early alpha stage.

I'm glad they are fixing core gameplay before adding something new on top of what's currently broken.

let´s not compete with Star Citizen, they can be the FPS game with space ships

I wish they could, but alas. :(

Hmm, I wonder what it could possibly be. Improving planetary generation, introducing new lighting system, creating a modular procgen system for fauna in JWE and having all kinds of flora in JWE and PC combined. Boy oh boy, what could they possibly be working on. :D

Although I'm slightly disappointed that atmospheric landings and gas giants weren't announced I'm absolutely amazed that Horizons owners will be getting the next set of updates for FREE!

Yeah £0.00 $0.00 €0.00 count them! Or don't because you can't.

I can't really begrudge this, I may even have to buy some cosmetics...

Maybe I'm getting a little long in the tooth for this kind of thing, I don't care about Star Citizen, but the expo left me asking, what do I want from Elite Dangerous, because the expo didn't give an answer, about the only announcements that made me salivate was the Chieftain and new planetary shaders, but both those were aesthetic reasons only, I'm still waiting to feel the depth.

I'm actually very happy that they didn't announce any new major feature for 2018. I've always felt ED was released one year too early, and as much as I want space legs, atmo landings, gas giants, more than anything I want Frontier to take a break from new features and consolidate what we have already.

I like the roadmap for 2018, the game needed this stuff badly considering all the complaints for the issues addressed. Atmospheric worlds done right in 2019 sounds good to me. As sleutelbros astutely noted, they are slotting the pieces into place they need to pull off atmospheric worlds and justify charging for it as a new series of expansions.
