FYI - check game mode if VR has gotten choppy for you. Some update turned it back on unexpectedly for me.

I've become so frustrated by how dumbed-down the settings are in Win10. Everything requires registry edits now. Has anyone tried this edit? I wonder if it only controls the game bar as can be done through settings, or if it truly controls the game mode itself (and whether it persists through Windows updates).

Open the Windows registry and navigate to the following location:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\GameBar

Here, look for a key called AllowAutoGameMode. If it’s not there, create it. Right-click inside the right panel and select New>DWORD (32-bit) Value. Rename the new value AllowAutoGameMode.

By default, this key will have the value 0. It will disable Game Mode. If you want to enable Game Mode, change its value to 1.

Game Bar (GB) is enabled by default in Win10. When it's enabled, you can press the windows key + g in a game window to bring up the GB that has options like recording, Game Mode (GM) toggle on/off, etc. GM throttles other non-game applications so your game has more resources, so it will theoretically perform better. This is a problem for VR, however, since the VR runtime is handled by software (Oculus Home or Steam) outside of the game itself. To turn off GM you have to have GB enabled, press win+g in a game, and disable GM. You can then disable GB.

It's all so simple right?

Awesome. Thanks for the tip. I look forward to giving that a try.

One thing I noticed was that Steam VR really hosed my settings. When I turned it off, and just started running Elite from the executable, I was able to turn my settings up a notch. Hopefully the GM thing helps too. I'm running like a 1060, so I've been a little surprised with some of my VR settings in-game.

P.S. Why does Windows have to do that nonsense? Can't they just leave us alone? It's like shutdown notifications... I know... casuals users. But here's a question - why don't they just give us an easy option to turn all of the crap off? Warning: If you diable this feature, Windows will treat you like someone who has been working with computers for 30 years and who knows what they're doing. Sigh...

hmmm... I don't seem to have the option, either in Game Bar or settings.

Nor is it in my registry.

I can just type game in the search bar and it should show up as (Control how game bar opens and recognizes your game)[where is it]

What version of Win 10 do you have?

Game mode moved to the game bar with the creators update, which was released in late October.

Impressive, just realized it was meant to be OFF instead of ON (as I always tend to activate it with games), and what a change...

I was just not happy with the performance of the rift and was looking for tips for improving and for getting rid of the lag, but this change was the one I was looking for...

Thanks for the tip, and pity I did not read correctly the first time...

I'm thinking on doing a compendium of this to bear in mind when configuring the rift...
