Gaining Negative Rep

How do you guys do it?

I seem to be trapped in happy land where everyone loves me. :-(
Even if I relentlessly murder people, their faction still greet me as allies!

The hole reputation mechanic is entirely back to front if you ask me!
Gaining rep, piece of cake.
Losing rep, near impossible.

Switcheroo needed.

Not planning to do this just yet, but eventually I wanted to pick a side between Federation and Empire, and make the other side hate me, just cuz'.
But it's not actually possible.
I don't want to join PP because I don't have the game time to commit to the grind, plus it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Lol

Options you have :
- take down their Ships (i.e. legit by specifically Targeting only NPC Pirates from a specific Faction - but never handing in Bounties for them specifically which would restore Rep -> your Rep decreases)
- Fail Missions for them (Abandon is sufficient to nosedive Rep)
- get scanned carrying Illicit Cargo within their jurisdiction

I agree though, that I'm still surprised i.e. picking sides in a Civil War/War doesn't bother the one you persistently fight against.
After the big fight is over, the losing side doesn't seem to take any offense in you having greatly assisted that ;)

Personally, the only Factions I ever got and locally often maintain Hostile Rep with are the Unfettered/Anarchy Factions.
Either from Bounty Hunting runs or them plain Interdicting me every day, thus naturally and often ending up in them being 100% Hostile eventually.

One scanned load of illegal goods was enough to tank my federation rep. Although I may have been unlucky there and got scanned when fines for that were extremely high

Come to my house. Nobody likes anyone round here.

Lol well may have just learned the best way to gain negative rep!
Could have been an accident, but still...

Failing pilot rescue missions! I've managed to go hostile with the Nobles Of HIP 10716. Because I stacked a load of rescue missions, but failed every single one, because the timer ran out (before it was supposed to!).
Upon returning to the base, with a cargo hold full of pilots, I was 'welcomed' to a message saying "you're not welcome here!"
....
"Docking permission granted"....

Soooo, being hostile isn't all that fun either. The base was lit up red on my scanner, yet I just casually landed like it wasn't an issue. I was expecting to be blown out of the sky. Lol
After taking just 2 more missions, and completing them, I went back up to 'unfriendly'...

i'm hostile with quite a number non-major-faction alligned minor factions. as mentioned above: killing there ships makes you hostile; so for exampel I'm hostile to many pirate factions in systems i like to bountyhunt in. and some of the systems i worked on the bgs in .... kiliing security ships is a heavy hitter for influence, and for your reputation, too.

it is very easy to get out of a hostile status, though, if you care about it.

for major factions - i can only assume being hostile means cmdr's doesn't run a lot of missions for major-faction-alligned minor factions. if you do, you will be allied/friedly with the three permanently.

For some reason, the system used to bounty hunt in, I couldn't actually become hostile with anyone. It was all rather strange.
Basically I was chasing in bounties for both sides all the time. Lol
Allied all round!

maybe you have to think about it this way: We are all part of the Pilot Federation. We benefit from the fact that this institution has a very high reputation among all factions and the members (i.e. the players) are freelancers and can do whatever they want as long as they don't go on a rampage and exceed their limits. If you know the mass effect universe you can think about it like all of us are mini-spectre agents
