I've done a few missions to start gaining rank. I've read various posts about donation missions etc.
Is there no other way? I hate missions......

Donation missions are as far as i'm aware the only option if you hate missions, since they don't require you to leave the station. It's still technically still a mission, but it's possible to switch between the 3 game modes in order to refresh the bulletin board and keep on donating while only having to leave the station for the naval promotion missions.
Edit: I'm referring to the money donation missions here btw, others might ask for meds or food which will require you to bring some or go out and find them.

For empire i think the only way to rank gain % is missions .. not seen any other factors effect it really.

That's what I've been trying in Tamar, the first day I did get a good few and then got a naval mission but today they just wont roll out no matter how many times I log in and out.
I did want a clipper as my next ship as I have been stuck in a vulture for ages now and need something new to fly.
Ahh well I guess any ships that require rank will have to stay there.
OP, if you're asking of other ways to raise Empire rank (not minor faction influence) then, yes, missions in some for or fashion are the only way. Turning in exploration data, trading within Empire space, fighting off the Empire's enemies in a Combat Zone, working directly for an Imperial power in Powerplay do not raise your overall rank.
But doing those things does increase your reputation with local factions which increases the number of missions available...I think.
