GAL-COP in the current universe

Yes. Alas, it is ancient history in 3302.

Cheers,

Drew.

That's odd.. the procedurally generated news stories on GALNET seem to disagree.

There is a Minor faction called Gal-Corp somewhere but it is also noted it is using the name to gain legitimacy or some such isnt there

Jotunheim

While Gal-Cop have been accused of cashing in on the historic name of GalCop, that hasn’t stopped the corporation from flourishing.

Sorry I never played the original series what is, or was Gal-cop?

The GALactic Co OPerative (GalCop) was a political construct in the original Elite game (1984). That game was set around the year 3125. You can get a flavour from the original Elite manual.

The original Galcop was formed in the year 2696. It was the result of declining relations between the 'Far Colonies' (what are now known as the 'Old Worlds' - Lave, Diso, Leesti etc) and the Empire and Federation Superpowers. They became openly hostile and trading was forbidden between them, though there was no war (This is the rationale for the original Elite game not featuring 'real' star names in 'galaxy 1' - the Galcop ships' hyperdrives only allowed travel to Galcop member systems, not Fed/Empire ones.)

They were not an organisation that had territory in the classic sense, they oversaw trade between systems, but the individual systems were their own masters. Galcop policed space and the various stations around the planets, not the planets themselves.

Galcop suffered the original Thargoid invasions far more than the Federation and the Empire circa 3150, and were forced to request aide from them. However, the increasing pressure on the organisation caused economic strains which were becoming fatal by 3162.

In 3170 Galcop collapsed entirely, with the result that it longer existed by the time of the second Elite game, set in 3200. (The Lave starting point in the second game carried a fine that had to paid if you entered Federation space as a result of Galcop's collapse).

By 3300 AD Galcop is a footnote in history.

Whatever the current Gal-Cop or Gal-Corp is, it has nothing to do with the original GalCop.

Cheers,

Drew.
